Aim

We're working to end furniture poverty + aim to help 100 local households access essential items needed to set up a safe, comfortable home.

The 100 Homes Project is built around helping 100 local households access essential furniture and white goods through HFS.

...it's as simple as that. We want people in need to get the best start to a new chapter – and this means equipping them with as many essentials as possible.

'Essentials' in this instance means: a bed (with bedding and mattress), a sofa and/or easy chairs, a wardrobe/chest of drawers, a table + chairs, carpets, and curtains.

And in terms of appliances/'white goods', it means: a washing machine, a fridge-freezer, and an electric cooker.

Anything you can donate will be appreciated, and we will share all the updates on the good it does.

Here's an idea of how far your donation could go*

*bearing in mind these stats refer to your contribution entirely on its own, without including the automatic match funding + Gift Aid)

Hastings & Rother Furniture Service (HFS) is an independent local reuse charity that has been serving Hastings & Rother since 1988.

Essentially, we help people create homes.

To us, this means providing affordable furniture, appliances and essential household items to people across Hastings & Rother who may otherwise struggle to access them - including those experiencing financial hardship, homelessness, domestic abuse, resettlement and other difficult circumstances.

A large proportion of the people HFS supports are simply trying to furnish a home affordably at a time when replacing essential household items has become increasingly (and inordinately) expensive.

What makes HFS unusual (and even more wonderful!) is that the environmental and human side of the work happen together naturally. Keeping furniture and appliances in use for longer not only helps humans and their homes, it also reduces waste, diverts usable items from landfill and prevents the carbon emissions associated with manufacturing and transporting new products.

HFS sees reuse not simply as recycling, but as part of a wider circular economy approach focused on reducing unnecessary consumption and keeping resources in use for longer.

Our biggest focuses are:

- stopping good furniture going to landfill

- making essential household items affordable

- cutting carbon through reuse

- creating jobs, skills and volunteering opportunities

...and most importantly, helping people build safe, stable and manageable homes.

Between 2025 and 2026, we facilitated the reuse of 3,968 pieces of furniture, which in turn has saved 198.57 tonnes of waste from landfill, and helped hundreds of households.

And we're not done yet.
