Help fund a volunteer-led leaflet and social-media campaign so people across Staines can read, assess and sign the Ali G petition before 24.
Ali G has given Staines a remarkable place in British popular culture. With a new film approaching on 23rd October, the petition asks the Council to explore whether that recognition could be turned into measurable benefits for our town: more visitors, greater spending in local businesses, positive publicity, civic pride and support for activities for children and young people, echoing Ali G’s campaign to support the community centre in Ali G Indahouse.
This Crowdfunder has one clear purpose: to pay for professionally printed petition leaflets and targeted social-media promotion before the petition closes on 24 August.
I will distribute the leaflets voluntarily. No money is being requested for my time, delivery costs, a landmark or payments to Spelthorne Borough Council.
Why the campaign matters
Under Spelthorne Borough Council’s petition scheme, a matter affecting more than one ward should be referred to the relevant Service Committee once it reaches 300 valid signatures. This is the baseline target. The ambitious target, which may be possible depending on this campaign, is 4,500 signatures. This would take the petition to Full Council, the highest decision-making body, with a compellingly large mandate from residents.
As petition organiser, I would then have the opportunity to present councillors with the economic, social and local-pride case for taking the proposal forward. The committee would remain free to decide how the Council should respond, but the petition creates a formal route for the evidence to be heard publicly. But the more signatures of voters to persuade them, the more likely they are to say YES.

The leaflets will include:
What happens at different funding levels
If we raise less than the target, the money will fund the largest affordable print run and a reduced social-media campaign.
If we reach the target, the full leaflet and advertising plan will proceed.
If we exceed the target, additional funds will be used for more leaflets and further targeted promotion before the petition closes.
Any material balance remaining after the petition closes, or if the absolute maximum threshold of 4,500 signatures is met causing a Full Council decision (the highest level of decision), funding will be donated evenly to the local youth centres, with the amount and recipient published in the final campaign update.
Transparency
Supplier quotes, the final number of leaflets printed, advertising expenditure and overall campaign spending will be published through Crowdfunder updates.
This is an independent resident-led campaign. It is not organised, funded or endorsed by Spelthorne Borough Council, or any political party.
