Who are we?

Frenetic Fox Theatre is a Dorset-based company which creates live work that is a collaboration between theatre-makers and often disadvantaged or vulnerable community groups within the county. So far we have produced an award-nominated solo performance piece entitled 'Appily Ever After' (Best Spoken Word, The Greater Manchester Fringe, 2017) which combined original song, projection and the spoken word to explore the perils and pitfalls of online dating.

What are we up to?

Our newest theatre project comes in the form of devised theatre piece 'Sub!' which is a collaboration with West Dorset theatre-makers Hannah Soulsby-Phillips (Rummage Theatre), Jacqueline Avery (The Makeshift Ensemble) and myself - Paul Lawless (Frenetic Fox Theatre).

Our second show is to explore white, abandoned working class males and the performance of 'maleness' within deprived social settings. As part of the development process I am keen to facilitate writing workshops with LGBT youth in the West Dorset region as part of a Sister project, provisionally entitled 'eLiGiBiliTy'. These sessions aim to foster participant's own sense of agency, whilst allowing them to explore their creativity in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment and imbue them with a sense of aspiration as a member of the LGBTQI+ community residing in a rural setting.

How will this come together?

We will organically devise new writing inspired by their own experiences which will culminate in a sharing of sorts. We will also explore movement throughout this process, led by Makeshift Ensemble Practitioner Jacqueline, using their writing as the springboard into the physicalisation of their words and ideas. We will document this writing in the form of audio and/or performance capture (based on the general consensus of the assembled group) and utilise digital technologies, such as hand-held projection as part of a sharing.

Why are we doing this?

Community outreach forms a huge part of the company remit and we are dedicated to access community groups who are marginalised or oppressed to offer them a platform to have their stories' heard.

As a gay man myself, I grew up in the West Dorset area where there is a severe lack of encouraging, positive LGBTQI+ representation. This lack of visibility affected my self-worth and esteem. I had the financial means and opportunities to recoup this through my transition in to an adult through education and my career, however I recognise that others are not as fortunate as me and would like to inspire others to achieve and feel empowered.

Who do we want to work with?

Our aim is to facilitate these sessions in conjunction with the Space Youth Project Weymouth and Dorchester groups (http://www.spaceyouthproject.co.uk/). Formed in 2001, Space Youth Project runs regular youth groups all across Dorset for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or those questioning their sexuality and/or gender identity, offering one-to-one support, family support, school-based workshops for primary-age children and training for professionals.
