Establishing a Community Interest Children's Play Hub in Edinburgh with Profits supporting local families and family charities.

by Amber Pattullo in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom

The importance of play and what we stand for.

Playing isn't just fun, it's also the best way for young children to learn. By playing, children can practise all the skills they'll need as they grow up.

Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them.

We aim to bring children a range of heuristic, open ended and exploratory play experiences, whilst providing parents and carers the opportunity to socialise and make new friends.

Who are we?

We are a local group which launched in August 2018 who aims to become a social enterprise. This means that we are for the people and not profit.

Since we have launched we have held 28 events to bring together mums and their babies through weekly meet ups, workshops and pop up events. All events (except one which was priced at cost) have been free to attend and held by volunteers. But as the group has grown so have the children and we are about to launch our new baby group; Nurture the Play. The baby group has had a sensational response and we have already sold over 250 sessions pre launch. We would love to build this further but room hire in Edinburgh is high and infrequent, therefore we have decided to find us a full time home. A place where we can grow, hold further free events and enable us to keep costs low for our paid for sessions. We will be open to not only mums and babies but all children, parents and carers.

What we aim to do:

  • Have an indoor sensory garden where the children will be able to help to maintain and grow their own herbs, plants and vegetables.
  • A dedicated  prewalkers area that will be penned in to allow babies the opportunity to roam freely. In this area we will have equipment to support their development of physical and cognitive development.
  • A free play area where children can explore a range of wooden, open ended or heuristic toys.
  • We will have a mark making area, aswell as arts and craft, sensory and messy play sessions, to enable the children to explore how to express themselves and support their development of fine motor skills, imagination and creativity.
  • We will have a quiet zone with books, sensory lights and tents to hide in. This will support children's early literacy skills, build critical thinking and support their social development.
  • We will incorporate loose parts play into our sessions. What is loose parts play? Loose parts spark the children's creativity and innovation. In play, loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways. They are materials with no specific set of directions that can be used alone or combined with other materials. Loose parts can be natural or synthetic.
  • We will aim to be Eco-Friendly through the use of wooden toys and using recycled products where possible. We will strive to up cycle objects such as tyres, plastic bottles, packaging and other materials through our play and arts and craft sessions.
  • We will hold free to attend parent groups to connect local families, build a community, combat new mum isolation and provide support for new parents.
  • We will provide low cost venue hire to support local businesses and charities to increase the variety of play classes and workshops for families. All businesses will need to fit in with our ethos.
  • We will also have a small shop area where local producers can sell their products for a small fee.

About Me

I am a local mum who has two children. My eldest is 10 and is autistic, my youngest is 1. I have a BA in Childhood Studies and a HNC in Early Education, I have worked in schools, nurseries, crèches and children homes and have experience of managing early year settings. Since June 2018 I have been homeschooling my son and this has reinforced to me just how important play is in a child's life. My son struggles with paper based work and therefore we have been learning through play in our everyday life, the difference in his self esteem, confidence and learning is astonishing. This outcome combined with my mission to combat new mum isolation and provide opportunities for parents to socialise I have created this group. The group is my third baby and it has my love, time and passion. I hope that you can help me help others.
