Encouraging independent political action to save Sheffield street trees.
As the trees campaign enters what may be a critical phase, we in NO STUMP CITY plan to re-double our efforts and expand independent political action across Sheffield. We are always increasing our people power... but we also need more funds.
A NSC crowdfunder in November 2017 raised £750.00 in one week. But most of that money has been spent and hence the need for this 'TOP UP.' We have the same target: £750.00
1) We started the petition that asked Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to act as a mediator in the Sheffield trees dispute. (https://www.change.org/p/jeremy-corbyn-mp-jeremy-corbyn-please-mediate-the-sheffield-trees-crisis.) The petition has been signed by almost 12,000 people and was one of the reasons why Corbyn asked his Shadow Environment minister, Sue Hayman, to offer to act as a mediator between Sheffield City Council and tree campaigners.
2) We have handed out more than 4000 leaflets at more than 20 Labour Party meetings and otherevents across the city. These leaflets are ONE of the reasons why almost ten Labour Party branches and constituency parties, as well as Sheffield TUC, have called for a halt to the tree felling in Sheffield and an immediate mediated settlement.
3) We distributed 2,000 copies of our professionally-designed cards/decorations at our NO STUMP tram stop event in early December. The theme: ‘Trees aren’t just for Christmas’. A very positive response.
4) We made the spoof video ' Naughty or Nice.' (https://youtu.be/gGdfFvpT1Sk)
5) We prepared 20 unique placards, reading ‘Axe PFIs, Not Trees’, and established information pickets at 7 local Labour Party events. For example, 35 of us picketed a recent Sheffield District Labour Party meet.
6) We set up the crowdfunder, ‘Defend the Tree Defenders: Stump Up’ that was operated by, you guessed it, ‘Stump Up Sheffield. ’ (https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/stump-up-sheffield). The team has raised +£20,000.
1) The same NO STUMP group who prepared the NSC Christmas card are now finalising a new professionally-designed flyer. A total of 5,000 copies will be printed for distribution across Sheffield. First distribution is Saturday, 14 April at our ‘On the Stump Citywide’ event. Watch for announcements… and do come join us.
2) We are finalising other events and interventions and keeping our powder dry as we spread our mantra: the way ahead for the Sheffield trees campaign is to creatively combine non-violent direct action (e.g. standing under threatened trees) with various forms of independent political action. We are ready to move into action whenever and however it helps the cause.
So please help us raise £750.00.
Every tenner helps.
