Production funding for the short film project MY MAMA, A MAN

MY MAMA, A MAN - THE FILM

This is a story about a mum... a mum who wrote a list of of 60 things she wanted to do before turning 60.

Number one on her list was to be a man for the day.

MY MAMA, A MAN will be a stylised documentary following the journey of Director Helena Middleton's mum Julie, as she explores her identity through the power of gender performativity.

With the assistance of MAN UP 2017 Winner Manly Stanley, we will capture Julie's transformation through drag, whilst exploring where this desire stems from. When she was a child she always thought of herself as a boy... but what does 'being a man' mean to her, and what does she see herself gaining from this experience?

Linking in visuals of local drag king performers preparing their own looks, we will also be following Julie to her office, as her desire to spend the day at work is fufilled.

THE LOGISTICS

MY MAMA, A MAN will be shot across 3 days in September, at London & Bristol locations.

With a small but experienced team, we are working to a streamlined budget that will allow us to capture the essence of the drag kings and Julie's experience in an efficient, authentic - and cost effective! - manner.

THE TEAM

The MY MAMA Team is made up of Helena (Director), Rosanagh (Producer) and Edythe (Creative Producer).

Helena is a director and founding member of the internationally acclaimed theatre company The Wardrobe Ensemble. Her debut short film, KIN, is currently being submitted to festivals, and premiered at the Palm Springs International Short film festival in June 2017.

Since 2012 Rosanagh has been involved with various film and television projects, working with companies including Working Title, NBC Universal and Mammoth Screen. MY MAMA, A MAN will be the first produced under her production company Spinster Films.

Edythe is a queer feminist performance artist who has shown her work internationally, including performances at SPILL Festival’s National Platform, Buzzcut Festival, And What? Queer Arts Festival, Latitude Festival, Glastonbury, Knickerbocker, and Deep Trash. She is the co-founder of Low Stakes Festival (London, 2017). Her drag personas “Lady Vagina” and “Manly Stanley” have been performed in various cabaret and queer venues across the UK and in New York.

THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOU!

We are raising funds to shoot this, and we need your support.

Whatever you can donate, even a few pounds will help us reach our goal to fufill production costs and help us bring Julie's bucket list dream to the screen.
