‘Windrush Generation’ African Caribbean elders share and celebrate their own stories through an original new play.

by Malcolm X Elders Theatre in Bristol, Bristol, England

Who are we?

The Malcolm X Elders Theatre Company is a group of inspirational and highly respected elders from the African Caribbean Community in Bristol. Their huge contributions have made them much loved and celebrated members of the community; becoming role models for the younger and older generations. The group formed 10 years ago when they created a special partnership with acta Theatre, who they’ve worked closely with ever since.

What do we do?

Together, we have created 8 hugely successful original shows which explore personal stories relating to their experiences and celebrating their culture, helping to educate and inform their audiences. These shows have toured to schools, National and International Theatre festivals and venues across Bristol.

Why we need your help!

Recent events and stories surrounding the ‘Windrush generation’ have moved the Elders to share their own experiences: to create a theatre show that will put a stop to the misunderstanding and stigma which surrounds this community. They feel it is time for them to reclaim ownership of this story, to celebrate and empower the 'Windrush Generation".

Barbara Dettering, member of MXE Theatre Company says “It is an important time to set the records straight; to celebrate our contributions; to tell our stories, and the stories of our generation.”

The Elders and acta have spent the last couple of months working together to create an original show ‘We have Overcome’, celebrating the hard work and massive contribution of that generation to UK life. This show will give a platform for their own views on the current confusion around citizenship and right to remain.

It is crucial we reach as many people as possible. We want to perform 'We Have Overcome' at the Malcolm X Centre, St Pauls and at the actacentre, Bedminster. In the 80s, meetings encouraging local residents to take up British citizenship were held around St Pauls, making it even more significant to perform there. These locations across the city will help us reach a wide range of audience members, helping us to promote understanding and celebrate the contribution of people from the ‘Windrush Generation’.

What will our show do?

- Promote understanding of the historical background to the migration.

- Celebrate the contribution of this generation

- Explore the challenges for this generation and their resilience.

What do we need the money for?

We have already managed to raise funds to cover the first three month's of devising, where we share stories and create the outline of the show. However we still need funds to support our final rehearsal phase and to put on the show at the actacentre and the Malcolm X Centre. This includes venue hire, transport, costumes, set and lights, publicity, technical and artistic support team.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this project with your friends. We hope to see you at one of our performances in a venue near you soon!

Lots of love from The Malcolm X Elders and acta.
