As Manchester’s longest-running music festival, and the only live music event on the city's streets, we’re all about celebrating the spirit of our great borough and its people.
mjf is a registered not-for-profit charity so we need your help to create this magical musical moment in celebration of our great city.
We’d love our mjf community and the city of Manchester to get involved and support this one off, world premiere event.
'Mancunity' is a fanfare to the future and a celebration of Manchester. This large-scale piece by award winning composer Andy Scott will open mjf 2019 in a citywide mass participation event.
This piece is inspired by the beating heart of Manchester, the people, their resilience, our musical history and fierce future-facing attitude.
Drawing on the words of poet Tony Walsh, this world premiere will echo the recent histories of Manchester and pave the way for a bright, dynamic and loud future for the people of the city and their music.
Starting from different points across the city centre, crowds can join North West musicians as they lead musical processions filled with energy, vibrancy and sound towards our festival hub main stage in St Ann’s Square. Here they pass the baton to an eclectic hand-chosen ensemble of musicians who, under the direction British Composer Award winner Andy Scott, will take audiences on a journey of imagination and positivity.
How Your Support Will Help
In our pledge to work with emerging musicians from the North West, we have been ambitious in our aim to work with over 100 bright musicians from the area.
It is important to us that this event is free of charge for audiences of all backgrounds as we show our pride for this great city.
Your support will help us realise this exciting project and continue our legacy as a champion of new talent, and fresh, original musical works.
