This project aims to support people in the Lancashire area during the pandemic, especially those who lose a loved one during this period and are unable to have a proper funeral due to the restrictions.
11,000 people die in the UK every week. During the Covid -19 pandemic funerals are very restricted, the loved ones of the people who pass away over the next 12 weeks can’t have the funeral they’d planned to help them to process their grief.
During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in the UK:-
Funeral attendance is limited to as low as 6
No order of service
Standing and sitting 2 metres apart
No shared limousine
Dying wishes not honoured
Death certificates can’t be collected in person
Belongings can’t be collected from hospitals
Funeral Director discussions can’t be had in person
If 5 immediate loved ones are affected by each death that’s 55,000 people not permitted to process grief with a funeral every week. Over 12 weeks that’s 660,000 people affected.
Why the project is important
We know that physical health is hugely affected by mental and emotional health.
We know that bereavement causes emotional and mental pain and that funerals and been surrounded by loved ones helps to reduce the emotional, mental and physical pain .
When we experience bereavement our autonomic nervous systems switch to sympathetic dominance, the fight flight response. This releases damaging stress hormones which reduce immunity, cause inflammation, stress the heart and lung, cause glucose release, raise blood pressure, cause physical pain, cause insomnia and poor digestion. Staying in this state for a prolonged period is associated with depression, anxiety, cancer, stroke, heart disease, chronic pain.
At Mandala yoga & wellbeing we empower people to switch from Sympathetic nervous system dominance to Parasympathetic nervous system dominance (rest and digest) through yoga, meditation, counselling, sound therapy and Nidra sleep therapy, relaxation therapy and sound therapy.
We are a hub of wellbeing, a place of friendship and connection without expectation or judgement and a place that shares the science and practice of mindfulness, meditation and yoga to help our community to live with greater understanding of their physiology and mind so we can live with ease.
What is the fundraising for?
1: During the pandemic we will offer free online courses and classes for those experiencing bereavement, financial hardship, anxiety and loneliness.
2: Once the physical distancing has been lifted we will be offering free 4 week gentle yoga courses and relaxation therapy for those affected by bereavement during the Covid-19 pandemic. If we are able to raise enough with match-funding from the National Lottery we will also offer free counselling.
We will take referrals from Local Authority registry offices, housing associations and debt advisory and funeral directors.
We aim to work in our community to support the bereaved to grieve, to discover the joy of movement and build positive relationship with body, mind and each other through yoga and meditation. Thank you for reading, Emma and the Mandala team xxx
