Lost Words for Lincolnshire Schools

Lost Words for Lincolnshire Schools

To provide a copy of The Lost Words, by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris & the Explorer Guide to every Primary School in Lincolnshire

We did it!

On 9th Jul 2018 we successfully raised £5,522 of £5,000 target with 133 supporters in 28 days

New stretch target

If our initial target is reached, due to the generosity of donors, our stretch target will allow us to send a copy of the Lost Words and companion Explorer Guide to all senior schools in Lincolnshire too.

Inspired by other wonderful campaigns across the UK - we aim to provide the Lost Words and teacher's guide every primary, junior and special school in Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

We have many rewards for donations painting and prints by Jackie Morris, 4 places on a nature writing workshop by Dr Amy-Jane Beer at £150 per head, a Robert Macfarlane signed copy of The Lost Words at £500, a fabulous limited edition print by Jo Sweeting for a £150 donation.

We also have an offer from Gorsebush to paint a mural for any business or home up to the size of 3x3 metres. Because this could be simple or complex depending on the client's wish, the donation price ranges between £600 and £1,000. Please contact us if this is of interest.  Examples of previous commissions can be viewed here: http://www.gorsebush.co.uk/murals.html

The Lost Words was created by Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris in October 2017 to celebrate once-common “nature” words – from acorn and wren, to starling and dandelion – that were dropped from the Oxford Junior Dictionary some ten years before.

The book takes twenty of the words that have been falling out of use amongst children - such as adder, kingfisher and bramble - and brings them back to life, through the magical paintings of Jackie Morris and the 'spell poems' of Robert Macfarlane

We would love all primary age children in Lincolnshire to have the opportunity to share in what this book has to offer. Depending on how you count them, there are about 415 schools in Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire that work with 4 - 11 year olds, plus we have some Special Schools that we would also like to give the book to.

As well giving the book to schools, we will supply a copy of “An Explorer’s Guide to The Lost Words”, a fantastic accompanying resource written by Eva John and published by the John Muir Trust which will help teachers get the most out of the book.

Our target of £5,000 should allow us to make sure that children in Lincolnshire have an opportunity to experience what this book has to offer.  The Lost Words is a book to be shared, to delight and inspire children,  and the 'spells' and the wonderful illustrations are sure to catch the imagination of all who read it.

With Crowdfunder, we have to achieve our target or no money is taken from our supporters and the project will not be funded.

The Lost Words is a joyful celebration of nature words and the natural world they invoke, and is set out in an ideal way to share these words across the generations. Words allow children to give things names, to share stories and memories.  Without the right words we cannot name, love, or - ultimately – care for these things.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, in their 70th anniversary year, are a wonderful partner in this campaign . This campaign was launched at the Lincolnshire Environmental Awards on 22nd May in Lincoln.
