isthisit? is a platform for contemporary art, exhibiting over 800 artists since its creation in May 2016, founded by Bob Bicknell-Knight. Online, it operates as a gallery producing exhibitions showcasing emerging to mid-career artists, hosting a roster of guest curators experimenting with the medium of the internet to interrogate a variety of concepts. The website also hosts residencies, where artists are given a web page to create new work that exists on the internet as a piece of net art. Offline, it has held exhibitions nationally and internationally and is the publisher of isthisit?, an ongoing book series.
In 2020 isthisit? successfully received an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant, enabling us to fund a six month project, occurring between October 2020 and April 2021, consisting of four online exhibitions, an online panel discussions and physical book. We were able to work with 17 different artists, collectives and writers during this time, including Morehshin Allahyari, Corey Hayman, Kumbirai Makumbe, Jonathan Monaghan, Richard Whitby, Larry Achiampong, David Blandy, Stine Deja, Mimi Ọnụọha, Tamara Kametani, Maria Mahfooz, Rene Matić, Keiken, Allyssia Alleyne, Emily Phillips, Jamie Sutcliffe and Wade Wallerstein.
As this project comes to an end we are looking forwards, and want to continue being able to pay those that we work with. Up until receiving funding last year, isthisit? hadn't had a budget, relying solely on in-kind support from the artists, curators and writers that we have worked with in the past. It is unsustainable to work with people in this way, especially during this ongoing time of uncertainty due to COVID-19. Our main aim for this crowdfunder is to be able pay the individuals that we work with.
For our next six month project we are hoping to be funded by our audience to work with six new artists and six new writers. The artists will be funded to undergo a digital residency on the isthisit? website for a month at a time where they will focus on predominantly digital projects. Each artist will also produce an editioned 3D printed artwork, available to backers. The six writers will be commissioned to interview each artist, with the interviews and images from the residency being edited into an editioned book, also available to backers. We are committed to working with a diverse range of individuals from underrepresented communities and backgrounds.
For this crowdfunder we have created a number of rewards. These include a copy of the recent isthisit? book, Networked Futures: Online Exhibitions and Digital Hierarchies, isthisit? tote bags, pre-purchasing one or more of the 3D printed artworks that will be created by the future isthisit? residents and pre-purchasing of the future isthisit? book that will be launched at the end of the six month project. All funders, beginning from £5, can also have their name printed inside the book, cementing their support for the project and isthisit?.
All profits from this crowdfunder will be going into running isthisit?, paying the artists and writers as well as covering the cost of printing the book.
For the past six months it has been an honour to work with a number of creative individuals with the help of the ACE grant, and through this crowdfunder we hope to continue our work within the digital art sphere. We need all the help we can get, so, if you can, please do share this crowdfunder, with everyone and anyone that you know. We need all the support we can get to be able to pay artists and writers properly and fairly for their time. Your money will go into supporting creatives to continue in this difficult time.
