Aim

We are raising money to help to fund our Big Bang @GTS event on 6th October 2017, for local school children across North Devon.

We are raising money to help to fund our Big Bang @GTS (Great Torrington School) in partnership with Group Training Development and North Devon Manufactures Association  on the 6th October 2017.  The event will target Years 5 & 6 from Primary Schools across Torridge & North Devon, plus Year 7 from North Devon Secondary schools.

With the rurality of our region many of the primary schools only have a handful of pupils in each year group, so the facilities they have for STEM (Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering) subjects is often limited. The Big Bang @GTS offers them the opportunity to expand their ideas. All the teachers who attend the event receive a pack which outlines all the workshops, all the resources and where to purchase the equipment we used, everything they need to take this back into their own school, giving them the confidence and resources to develop the teaching of STEM further.

The aim of the Big Bang @GTS is to show pupils how the’ Science of today is Technology of tomorrow’, through interactive STEM activities. Throughout the day there will be an array of interactive workshops; from DNA extraction, coding, to forensic science, making slime and many more–which all involve hands on practical skills in STEM. Plus a show by Ian Dunne called Science Magic…Magic, and in the Sports Hall there will be an employer’s exhibition with over 25 employers with hands on interactive stands, introducing pupils to the array of STEM careers giving them the opportunity to talk to employers about their business and roles - and appreciate the STEM opportunities available in North Devon.

In 2015 and 2016, the event was predominantly funded by the Manufacturing Challenge Fund (grant by Plymouth City Council). This year we are looking for private sponsorship opportunities and other external funding. The video gives you a snap shot of last year's event.
