We did it
On 23rd May 2021 we successfully raised £2,880 with 103 supporters in 76 days

We want to create a dedicated Support Hub for women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) with ADHD.

**Huge thanks to all of our supporters, the Crowdfunder has ended now - but the work is just beginning.  If you'd like to find out more please visit us at https://iridescentminds.org**

Iridescent Minds CIC is a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to supporting, empowering and campaigning for people who’ve been affected by the gender bias which has existed in the ADHD conversation.

The majority of people affected are women, but this issue also affects others especially those assigned female at birth.

The historical focus on ADHD in boys has meant that many females are either misdiagnosed or never find out that their struggles were because of ADHD.

We plan to create the world’s first dedicated Online Support Hub where women and others affected by the gender bias in ADHD can access specific and appropriate information, support, community and expert advice.

HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?
Our founder, Leah Leaves (Bevan), was diagnosed with ADHD at age 43 after years of being told that the difficulties she faced were depression and anxiety. No one had ever suggested that there might be something else going on. After diagnosis, Leah quickly realised that many others, mostly women, had similar stories. Yet no one seemed to be talking about this... outside of the ADHD communities at least... so the #iamadhd campaign was born.

Leah wanted to share the stories of 50 ADHD women during lockdown, and when she asked for volunteers she had over 300 responses in 24 hours. She realised that something more had to be done, and so Iridescent Minds CIC was born!

1614971445_freefall.pngWHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
ADHD has long been thought of as a childhood ‘disorder’ and the stereotypical person with ADHD is often thought of as a hyperactive schoolboy who can’t sit still in class. Physical hyperactivity is easy to spot and because it presents a problem for parents and teachers, may well lead to a diagnosis.

It’s not the whole story…
Of course, some girls display these characteristics as well, but other children (mainly girls) display the attention deficit or inattentive aspects of the condition which are often less noticeable to others. Characteristics such as chronic lateness, forgetfulness and daydreaming are less visible and can be explained away as laziness, not caring, or simply be missed altogether.

The impact is huge…
Many of us have struggled through life without a diagnosis, wondering how others manage to cope with the everyday things that can push us to meltdown. Without understanding that this is how our brains work, we tend to try and make sense of it by turning the sense of failure inwards and berating ourselves for being lazy, fickle, chaotic, and useless. The impact of this can be seen in almost every aspect of life, affecting everything from our self-esteem to our ability to reach our potential.

We found in our own survey of women and people assigned female at birth, that as a result of their ADHD - 81% had experienced shame and 70% had experienced isolation.

It's not rare.
For a long time people thought that ADHD was rare in females, but it's now thought to be around as common as in males.

Most experts suggest that the prevalence of ADHD is somewhere between 5 and 10% of the population, which means that in the UK, ADHD could be more common than diabetes, asthma and being redhead!

This means that a conservative estimate is 1.69 million females with ADHD in the UK, the majority undiagnosed.

1615057140_lazy_careless_messy_survey.pngCovid-19
The impact of the pandemic has been huge for many people, but for many women with ADHD who often have poor mental health already, the added burden of homeschooling, working from home and being cut off from their normal support network has been devastating. When you consider that even without the impact of COVID, a recent study highlighted that 1 in 4 ADHD women will attempt suicide in their lifetime (compared to only 1 in 33 women without ADHD), the need to provide dedicated support is clear.

Here’s to the future…
Make no mistake, an ADHD mind is powerful, beautiful and iridescent, but for too long many of us have been left misunderstood and isolated.

Now’s the time to create a space to call our own, where we can feel understood, included and supported"The #iamADHD Conversation"

HOW YOUR DONATION WILL HELP
We want to start by creating an online Support Hub, specifically designed to support the needs of women and others who have been denied diagnosis, recognition and support because of inequity and gender bias in ADHD.

Leah jokingly refers to it as a cross between Additude magazine, Mumsnet forum/reddit, and the Citizen's Advice Bureau!

The Support Hub is there to provide a source of information, resources and a private and safe space to connect with each other.

We need your help to do it though. We want to build something really special. Every £/$ makes a difference.

We'll use the money we raise to build the Support Hub site, resource area, and private forum.
