A Hythe ferry has been running since 1880. We are part of the community and want to keep this service running. Don't let Covid19 be the end.

New stretch target

The pier and ferry are always in need of investment after many years of neglect. The next major project is to change the rails on the railway track. In addition, all the wood under the railway lines also needs replacing before the new lines are laid. The cost of the planking could be in to the hundreds of thousands as it hasn't been changed for well over 40 years if not longer.  Any help to the funding and assistance in purchasing the wood will always be gratefully received.

We are part of history and the community and with your help, we can stay here for another 100+ years.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has created a very uncertain landscape for millions of British small businesses and we at the Hythe Ferry are no exception to that. At present, passenger boats and ferry companies (unlike busses and trains) are currently receiving little or no support from the government in order to keep these services operating. It is times like these that make it very challenging for businesses to survive without much-needed community support.

As it stands the company is in financial difficulties, we are supporting our staff and the main vessel is still due it's annual refit which it needs in order to meet the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) regulations however we are not operating at the moment due to COVID-19 Guidelines.

Alongside this our beloved train, is also in desperate need of repairs to the Tractor unit, tracks and carriages. This train is not only a key part of history but a joy for all the family. Check out this video to find out more about the pier and the train.

So, we are reaching out, we know many of you use our services for work, for day trips and to get around the local area. Everyone is being affected in some form by these unprecedented times, but when they finally finish, the last thing we want is not to have the freedom to travel across the Southampton water in a manner that can be so beautiful and peaceful. We also provide amazing views of working docks and cruise ships, and of course not forgetting a ride on the "Worlds Oldest Pier Train".

It is only with your direct help that we will keep this key part of the community going and help us to maintain the services for the short term and keep the operation sailing on the right tracks.

Once the pandemic is over the Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) will be back continuing with their restorations and renovations.

Together we can help keep Hythe Ferry operating in the community for years to come and help keep history alive!

Lovely feedback from our Facebook page

“Good service good trip amazing staff good value”

“No better way to see what's going on in Southampton Water and to get to the other side without taking the car.”

“The Hythe Ferry was a great way to visit Southampton for the day. It was so quick and easy and all the staff were really helpful and had a smile on their faces. We would certainly use them again when back in Hythe.”

“Thank you to all the staff working on the morning of the 22nd June. My parents had to get the ferry due to traffic and would not of arrived in time for my wedding if the staff on the ferry had not gone that extra mile.
Thank you so much.”
