What and where is Hamlet Wood? The Hamlet Wood Scout Camp site, based just outside Coxheath, Kent is entirely managed by volunteers and owned by the two Maidstone Scout Districts. The team are passionate about the site and the facilities that enable young people to come and experience the outdoors in a safe and secure environment. Over 2000 camping nights away were clocked up by young people at Hamlet Wood in the year before Covid!
What happens at Hamlet Wood? Young people come to have fun and experience the outdoors! To enable this to happen, the volunteer team spend their time maintaining the woodland, camping sites, buildings and coming up with ideas for new activities that can be offered to the young people mainly centered around woodland crafts and outdoor fun such as cooking on open fires, wood carving, pioneering projects and games - all set in over 30 acres of woodland.
Why we are asking for support to refurbish the toilets! The outdoor toilet block which is used mainly by campers and day visitors is badly in need of refurbishment. The outer fabric of the building is sound, but the internal works date back to the early 1960s and are just out of step with what our users want and need. We want to update the plumbing, sanitary ware, install showers and have a ready supply of hot water!
Much of the work will be undertaken by the volunteer team who have a host of skills amongst them, saving thousands of pounds by doing much of the work themselves.
What difference will funding make? To be awarded £5000 from the Calor Rural Community Fund will enable us to start the project and encourage others to donate to enable us to bring our facilities up to date and make them a comfortable experience for all the users! We will be #Flushed with success
