a warehouse full of rubble

Gecko is an award-winning and internationally acclaimed physical theatre company, led by Artistic Director Amit Lahav. Founded in 2001, the company has created 7 critically acclaimed shows, 2 associate shows and 2 films. The company is currently creating its eighth theatre production, commissioned by the National Theatre, which focuses on the themes of migration, racism, home and family.

The company has been based in Ipswich since 2008 and recently became a charity. In 2021-22 the company will redevelop the old Burton's warehouse on Ipswich’s waterfront, transforming it into the Gecko Creation Space, an industry significant devising and rehearsal studio, and Gecko’s new HQ.

1624008684_rehearsals_dark.jpgThe main element of the Creation Space will be a large sprung dance studio which can be split into two. This studio will be the full height of the warehouse with rigging, technical lighting and sound, level access for set loading and the ability to work in natural light or darkness. The front of the building will be split level; The ground floor will feature a flexible studio/workshop, foyer, kitchen and WCs; The first floor will house the company offices and a meeting room (another flexible space offering a fourth rehearsal/sound recording studio).

From its opening in 2022, it will transform the company’s creative process and participation opportunities, with training and creative engagement core components of the Creation Space, embedding our delivery in Suffolk, raising aspiration and nurturing future diverse arts leaders.

Why should I donate?

It is hard to overstate the impact the Creation Space will have on Gecko. But it’s not just about us – the impact will extend beyond the company locally, regionally and nationally.

It’s been an incredibly difficult year and we know that numerous organisations are fundraising to keep afloat and reopen. Like them, we’re looking to the future and working towards a vision that will allow us to support as many people as possible, including artists, school children, students and local residents.

1624008878_rehearsals_light.jpgWe’re creating a space by artists for artists that will give access to the time, technical facilities and freedom that’s needed to make the best work possible. It will be a unique facility in the country that can accommodate the lengthy technical making periods required when making a show and will be available for other companies for show creation and rehearsals.

1624008364_img_9774.jpgAdditionally, a key function of the Creation Space will be to host projects for young people, community groups and students, inviting them to push beyond the boundaries of their previous experiences, develop new skills, confidence and a new understanding of the world around them.

The project is taking place in partnership with Ipswich Borough Council who will develop the ‘shell and core’ of the building. They’ve already cleared the site and plans are well on their way, with building work due to start in the autumn of 2021.

Our job is to achieve the internal fit-out of the building. We’ve already raised £747,000 of our £1.3m target thanks to Arts Council England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport but we need your help to turn our dream into a reality.

We've already reached our Crowdfunding target of £25,000 which has been doubled thanks to support from the Architectural Heritage Fund. Any additional donations now received will go towards the fit out of the the Creation Space, creating a ‘centre of excellence’ for contemporary performance and dance on Ipswich's waterfront with our neighbours DanceEast, attracting international companies to the town to use the facilities, raising aspiration through training and mentoring, and highlighting pathways into the cultural and creative industries.

We know you have a choice of who to support, so would like to thank you for choosing the Creation Space, it means a lot to all of us here at Gecko.
