FRANZ KAFKA – APPARATUS, a new play based on 'In the Penal Colony' by Franz Kafka.

You are cordially invited to contribute to a most unusual adaptation of Kafka’s tale of a mechanically achieved execution - death by means of a complex machine designed and constructed in a nightmare. Tragedy, comedy, horror and the absurd intermingle in this dramatic labyrinth of cruelty, obsession and madness.

Blue Devil, is staging ‘Franz Kafka – Apparatus’, a new play by Ross Dinwiddy, director of 2017’s sell out and critically acclaimed revival of Joe Orton’s, ‘Ruffian on the Stair’ in Brighton Fringe 2018 (**** Fringe Guru, **** remotegoat, **** Voice Mag, Nominated Best Newcomer Brighton Fringe Awards).

Starring award winning actor, Emily Carding ('Richard III - A One-Woman Show' ***** Broadway Baby, ***** remotegoat, **** The Stage, **** New York Times, Winner BOBBY AWARD Edinburgh Fringe), as The Officer, in a gender change from the Kafka original.

We need your help in bringing this disturbing, funny and challenging story to life at Brighton Fringe 2018 and beyond. Written at the height of the First World War, Kafka tells the tale of events at a Devil's Island-like penal colony, all too real at the time, but his incredible writing places in it an extraordinary machine - a huge and complex apparatus of unimaginable torture and brutal execution that seems to have been devised and built in hell. In doing so, Kafka seems to predict the scientific cruelties that were to dominate the years ahead and that still lurk today.

Your contributions will ensure we cover the costs of pre-production, including rehearsals, costumes, set design and build and make us ready for the first night on 4th May.
