Aim

We are going to record the first Femmes de la Mer album this January, but need some help to make this dream a reality.

Every time we perform, people come up to us afterwards and ask us how they can listen to us at home; do we have a CD? Or can they download our songs?...The answer has always been "not yet", but we'd love to change that. To do that, we need a little help, so we've set up this Crowdfunder to ask for support to get our very first studio album recorded.

Who are we?

Femmes de la Mer started 7 years ago when a group of friends went to see the Falmouth Shanty Festival and were so inspired they decided to form a group and return the following year to be in it! Since then, the group has evolved and grown, and is now a 15 strong crew of diverse women+, aged 21 to 57, and including film makers, teachers, actors, carpenters, photographers, carers, jam makers, farmers, artists, writers, musicians, nurses, herbalists, activists, potters, mothers, sisters and daughters. We are passionate about sharing stories of inspirational Cornish women and keeping traditional shanties and folk songs about the seas alive (occasionally adding a feminist twist to bring the songs into the 21st century!).

Why now?

2021 has been an incredbile year for us; we came out of lockdown and started the season singing at the iconic Minack Theatre on a perfect sunny, early summer evening.

From that, we went on to support the incredible Ben Howard; performing as the very first act at this year's Eden Sessions, and then supporting him at the Manchester 02 Victoria Warehouse and finshing at the iconic Brixton academy (which was as mind blowing as it sounds!).

So after that, we asked ourselves, where do we go from here? And we felt that the only way to finish a year like this is to plan the recording of our very first studio album.

The plan

We've booked ourselves in to record our album at The Sorting Room Studios at Dartington in Devon for the first weekend in January. Miraculously, all fifteen of us can make it (it may actually be the first time we will ever have all been in the same place at the same time). We've got a great set of songs to record, including our iconic, original songs about the incredible, inspirational Cornish women, Dolly Pentreath, Anne Glanville and Jenny Mopas. All we need now is the money to get us there. Please donate, however small, or you can use this Crowdfunder to pre-order a CD or treat yourself to one of our other exciting rewards including a private, unplugged gig in your own home.

Last but not least

Thankyou so much for taking the time to read this, even if you can't help us financially, you can help us by spreading the word!
