New stretch target

Invest in COVID-safe equipment to support the resumption of rehearsals and performances.

Lea Hall Brass Band is part of a national initiative launched by Brass Bands England to save the many UK brass bands who are struggling to survive through the COVID-19 pandemic. Brass bands are a core of their local community, and many risk disappearing altogether without your help.

Lea Hall Brass Band is reaching out to the community we have served for forty years for support, as the pandemic that we have all endured this year, has seen performance after performance cancelled which has resulted in our regular annual income being decimated against a backdrop of us still having fixed running costs to cover.

Any risk to the main band will also knock on directly to our training band, and if lost forever, this will be another local community programme no longer available to the young (and not so young) people of Cannock Chase district and surrounding area.

There are documented proven health and mental wellness benefits associated with playing musical instruments and many of our members tell us that being part of our Brass Band does wonders for their general well-being.

We have therefore decided to try Crowdfunder as a mechanism to raise some much needed funds to ensure we can continue to bring Brass Band music to our community for the next forty years.

Why are we crowdfunding?

2021 will be our 40th anniversary year, however we have been unable to secure any government or local authority funding to-date, so we find ourselves in the unusual position of needing to raise some urgent funds in order to assure the survival of both the main band and our training band too.

Our immediate target is to ensure that we survive this winter, so any financial donations will be used to fund our fixed running costs to ensure we can survive this period of not being able to be self sufficient.

We are also pleased to offer purchase rewards for any extra special occasions, so if we exceed our immediate target, we will use any additional funds to invest in COVID-secure materials and equipment, so that when we can finally resume rehearsals and performances, we can do so safely.

About Lea Hall Brass Band

FOUNDED- Relative to many of Great Britain’s illustrious brass bands, ours is a relatively short history. Formed originally as Rugeley Power Station Brass Band during 1981, our purpose was simply to provide a social activity for power station workers.

LOCAL - Two of our founder members, worked at Rugeley B, as a Stores Supervisor and Station Warden, respectively whilst other players came from a variety of departments across the Rugeley B site.

COAL - In later years, family and friend playing members helped swell the ranks along with some miners from the adjacent Lea Hall Colliery, which was part of the Cannock Chase Coalfield.

PROUD - Although we can never claim to be a colliery-band, our foundations are firmly rooted in the Cannock Chase Coalfield that once supplied Rugeley Power Station. Indeed back in the 1980’s it was widely believed that Rugeley B was the only power station in the UK to have its own brass-band.

THE BAND PLAYED ON - Through the pit closures of the late 1980’s / early 1990’s and more recently in 2016, when the sad closure of Rugeley B Power Station necessitated us to finding a new home; once again, the band played on...

FRESH START - The resultant re-location to Lea Hall Social Club, launched a  new collaboration for us, along with our re-brand to Lea Hall Brass Band. However given Lea Hall Colliery was Rugeley B’s neighbouring pit and supplied it with coal until 1991, it almost feels like we’ve never moved home.

COMMUNITY- So what started out almost 40 years ago as a simple community social idea, born of a handful of proficient players and lots of learner players - has resulted in almost four decades of brass band entertainment across Rugeley, Cannock-Chase, Staffordshire and indeed the broader UK and Europe.

ACCESSIBLE TO ALL - During the last 40 years, we have stayed true to our roots and maintained that our band retains a Community Band status rather than becoming a contesting band, thus remaining accessible to all. By continuing to welcome beginner, lapsed and returning players we remain committed to assure brass banding has a sustainable future in our area.

TODAY- Lea Hall Brass Band remains the only independent ‘traditional British style brass band’ operating within the Cannock-Chase District, which we hope you will agree, makes us pretty special and worthy of preserving.

Thank you for taking the time to find out about our humble beginnings and we look forward to seeing you at one of our performances in the future.

About Save Our Brass Bands

Brass bands exist in every corner of the UK, with over 30,000 people of all ages and standards taking part in weekly activity – rehearsing, performing and providing entertainment for their local community.

But we risk losing this forever.

Brass Bands saw their main source of income disappear in an instant when they ceased being able to perform in March in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Months later, we still don’t know when normal performances will be able to take place. A significant loss in income over the Summer months, paired with necessary expenditure needed to make rehearsal spaces Covid compliant means that many Brass Bands are in a perilous financial situation.

Without urgent support, we could lose our nation’s amazing Brass Bands. Please help us to make sure they survive this crisis and will be there to be enjoyed by future generations.

Please donate, share this page widely and do what you can to help us to make sure our Brass Bands survive this crisis.
