To publish a picture book exploring Doncaster & promoting a love of reading, sending copies to all primary schools and food banks
I am an author, illustrator and teacher from Doncaster, and I am aiming to publish 'Doncaster Stories', a picture book I produced for a masters in illustration which I achieved at the end of last year. This is primarily targeted a Key Stage 1 children and promotes Doncaster alongside a love of reading. To make the book accessible to a wider audience, it also links to video translations into Polish, Romanian, Czech and English.
The book has recently been shortlisted for the Creative Conscience Awards 2021 and has received positive feedback from Doncaster educators, as well as 'Lost Words/Spells'illustrator Jackie Morris...
“The children were very engaged in the book. As they read through, they were very excited to point out the places in Doncaster that they recognised.”
Lakeside Primary School
“The book was perfect for our whole-school reading project: it had been written with the purpose of instilling a love of reading and also had strong local links, celebrating Doncaster’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. To support our EAL families, it is also translated into Czech, Polish and Romanian so that language is not a barrier to accessibility.”
Town Field Primary School
“We were lucky enough to get a preview copy of 'Doncaster Stories' in class. It was perfect for our topic - a hugely entertaining book as well as an invaluable teaching resource. It has inspired our children to have a real pride in our town. They love spotting the details in the illustrations, leading to a deeper understanding of Doncaster's rich history and geography.”
Auckley Junior School
"It’s so important to have books about ‘our place’ where we live. To understand that our environment is as valuable as anywhere else. It’s also really important to remember that books can and should be fun. Reading gives such value to the lives of everyone. It helps us empathise, it helps us escape, it teaches us. This book has all these things and more."
Jackie Morris, illustrator of The Lost Words
I am now looking to get the book published but need a bit of help to make this happen. On publication, copies of the book will be donated to every primary school in Doncaster and 500 copies will go to Doncaster food banks to be donated to families that need them most.
So please help me publish 'Doncaster Stories' to help promote both reading and Doncaster to the children of our town. You can pre-order the book, nominate a name for the dedication page, or even sponsor it... all help gratefully received!
