Who are we
AJ Cricket Academy is a thriving grassroots cricket club in Merton which provides coaching for children aged between 5 and 18. Having over 300 members, we run an all-season cricket training programme, camps and one to one coaching sessions. On top of that, the members can hone their skills by participating either in our league or friendly matches.
Recently, we started working with Morden Cricket Club, which has been around since 1891, supporting local talent and community through training and organising tournaments.
Together, we aim to make a difference in young people’s lives as they learn about fair play, supporting teammates, winning and losing.
In order to give youngsters their first taste of competitive cricket, we are raising funds to upgrade our training and clubhouse facilities and expand the current provision with a new cricket programme for girls.
What is our vision
Today’s challenging times have had a big impact on young people’s lives. Their daily routines were interrupted due to subsequent lockdowns, hence they had fewer opportunities ti meet their peers and less motivation to engage in a focused physical activity. This meant less training, less match play and ultimately, less fun.
Therefore, we firmly believe the club’s healthy progressive environment supported by top quality professional coaching is ideal to help local youngsters thrive and maintain good spirit.
Also, in our view it is about time to change the traditional perception of cricket as a male sport and make it more inclusive.
As an expanding club with ambitious growth plans we want to play an active role in making this change happen.
We recognise the importance of net practice in the development of our players, therefore our key goal is to enhance their training environment by installing outdoor cricket nets.
Having the nets on site would not only improve the level of coaching we provide but also allow us to train more children.
We also want to make a number of improvements at our pavilion to make it more functional and comfortable for the members.
Last but not least, we are planning to pilot a new cricket training programme exclusively for girls, running from winter 2021 until spring 2022.
Our objective is to enter at least one team in the league and have a girls section with more than 20-30 girls by summer 2022.
AJ Cricket Academy was set up in 2010. It is led by the Founder and Director, Ali Jaffer who played first class cricket for Karachi in Pakistan.
Ali and his team of coaches give every child personalised attention. This approach is in stark contrast with the conditions in bigger clubs in the area where children can get lost in the crowd and never play competitive cricket. Ali’s passion stems from the belief that cricket is for everyone regardless their level of ability and the main focus of training should be enjoyment of the sport.
Therefore, as a team we created motivating environments where every child is encouraged to embrace challenges as they are learning how to play.
Since the club was founded, we have competed in extensive league fixtures at the highest level and won in two age groups within the local NEC league.
In addition to that, a number of our players have represented the Surrey County.
Having a permanent base in the picturesque setting of Morden Cricket Club has given our junior cricketers more opportunities to grow and progress into senior level cricket.
By donating to this project you can help us roll out these new initiatives and stay on track to deliver the cricket nets in 2021.
