Hi, my name's Anna and I have been leading the clean-up and development of what was previously a disused area on Crantock Street, Newquay for around 4 years.

This Crowdfunder campaign has been created to raise funds for a mural on the wall of the garden to brighten up the area and create a brighter, more inviting space for the community to enjoy.

The Garden Area

Many years ago, the area was home to Newquay's fire station and then a local school and when I got involved, the area was used (illegally!) as off-road parking. (image of Newquay Fire Station on the garden site in 1918). Just after our first event the Eden Project donated some red-hot pokers for the garden, to reference the old fire station, which you can see dotted around and in one of the raised beds.

The garden is surrounded by Govenek (Newquay Age UK Day Centre), supported housing, the Women's Institute and Salvation Army and it's great to see so many people from the area sitting on the benches, enjoying their surroundings.

What we have been doing so far

In 2017, Newquay In Bloom did some clearing and planting of the area and encouraged local people to get involved and things evolved from there. A small group of local volunteers have taken over; it started with getting some bollards put in place to stop cars parking, have have continued to clean and plant the area to make it a much nicer area for people to enjoy.

We've held 4 Big Lunch events over the past few years, which have seen 50 + people join us for a few hours to enjoy music from local artists, share food and drink and meet their neighbours. These events have brought people in the community together and some great connections and friendships have been made.

We post all our events (planting, weeding, Big Lunch etc) on our Facebook page and advertise them in the Newquay Voice, Radio Newquay and BBC Radio Cornwall and while there are a small group of people that often join in, we want to encourage more people from the community to get involved more often.

Last year we installed a community book exchange, which has been incredibly well used - there are new books dropped off every day by local residents!

Two years ago, wonderful, much loved local resident Peggy who lived opposite the garden passed away and we raised funds at an event to plant a cherry tree (her favourite) and place a plaque there in her memory.

We are entered into the RHS It's Your Neighbourhood award with SW in Bloom every year - judges from our of county visit the garden to hear about the project and have recognised the work that's being done.

The future

I have recently agreed with Cornwall Council (land owners) that we can set up an official constituted 'Friends of Crantock Street Community Garden' group and 5 of us have been meeting to discuss our plans for the future. (Public AGM to be held shortly to agree the terms of our constitution and vote members in).

We have applied for money from the Cornwall Council Community Chest to pay for an outdoor noticeboard so we can keep the community updated with plans, meetings and events and ensure that we're engaging everyone in the project and any decisions that are made.

The Campaign

This Crowdfunder campaign has been set up to raise funds for a mural on the back wall (currently grey and very dull) and we are delighted that local artist Emily Donald has agreed to do this for us at significant reduced cost. Emily recently launched Killa Walls Gallery on the Killa Court in Newquay and is member of the Newquay Walls collective, a street art project, painting the walls of Newquay to brighten up neglected places. Emily has created some amazing murals around town including Harbour Heights and Wildflower Lane underpass - images below.

(Please note that the top image is a mock up of the mural only - the mural will be along this theme, but will be designed specifically to fit in this space.)

We are therefore hoping to raise money from our wonderful community of individuals and businesses to fund this project.

The cost will be circa £500, but as there is so much more we want to do, we're setting our target a little higher!

Other projects that we'll be seeking funding for from various sources are:

- Noticeboard (to advertise events, plans etc and to engage and consult on our plans)

- Water butt (for watering the garden as there is no running water)

- New beds and plants

- New groundworks

- New benches with planting

.... the possibilities are endless!
