Start-up capital to launch local news website.

by Graham Smith in St. Mabyn, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

Additional capital raised through crowdfunding will help to keep the subscription rates as low as possible.

Cornwall Reports will be a local news website serving the whole of Cornwall.

Cornwall Reports will be completely free of advertising.  Cornwall Reports will also be a not-for-profit social enterprise, owned by its subscribers.

Local journalism is in crisis, following the takeover earlier this year of local newspaper titles.  Websites for the Cornish Guardian, West Briton and Cornishman newspapers have already been merged and many journalists have lost their jobs.

Cornwall Reports seeks to restore the primacy of accurate, factual local news reporting - vital to the fabric of our democracy.

Cornwall Reports will be written and produced by professional journalists, updated throughout the day, every day.  A typical annual subscription will cost the equivalent of just 8 pence per day.
