Helping children and young people to build positive relationships and emotional resilience through peer support programmes in schools

by CLEAR in Truro, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

The more we raise, the more Peer Support Plus Programmes we can deliver! £3000 would mean we could work directly with 60 young people in 6 schools, reaching out to thousands of their peers.

Hello from CLEAR! We are a charity based in Cornwall supporting people who have been affected by domestic abuse, sexual abuse and other emotional trauma. We are the only all age, all gender therapeutic service for victims and survivors of abuse in the county. We also want to prevent abuse from occurring - and much of this work starts in schools.

Now more than ever, there is a need to help children and young people to build resilience, to understand what positive relationships look like, to recognise abusive behaviour, and to know how and where to get help.

CLEAR 4 Schools:  We think that one of the best ways to build an inclusive, respectful and supportive culture is to help schools to help themselves. We've developed a pretty awesome Peer Support Plus Programme that will train groups of young people to become Peer Supporters in their schools, helping other young people by being a listening ear,  a go-to for support and, if needed, a gateway to other help. Sometimes it's easier to share feelings with someone who is more like you, and Peer Support is a great way to do this. Peer Supporters will be champions for inclusion and diversity, challenging abuse in all of its forms.

Even better, Peer Supporters will gain accredited qualifications and skills that will be useful for life. They will be helping themselves, helping others and helping to create sustainable change.

Our Peer Support Plus Programme will be delivered by our Training and Professional Development Lead, a fully qualified teacher and therapist. She will be supported by trained facilitators who have had lived experience of emotional trauma. With your support we can run the Programme in 3 schools, directly supporting 30 young people who can go on to support hundreds more. Sessions cover:

  • Respectful, abusive and exploitative relationships; how to recognise them, where to get help
  • Pressures and expectations; capacity and consent
  • Online safety
  • Emotional wellbeing - what it is, why it is important and how to support it
  • Peer support - what it is and how it can work
  • Peer support - developing mentoring skills
  • Effective presentation skills
  • Recognising and applying transferable skills and competencies
  • Safeguarding

We will also help the Peer Supporters and school to decide and implement the best model of peer support for them, and provide supervision for the Peer Supporters for a year.
