The aim is to provide service users at The Glebe Centre and Walsall Night Shelter some Christmas cheer

by Linda Mason aka Mad Old Baggage in Walsall, West Midlands, England

The Glebe Centre is a multi-functional hub from where a variety of services are delivered that serve vulnerable adults in Walsall. Their skilled and friendly staff and volunteers work with a variety of individuals with differing needs.

At the Glebe Centre service users present with an array of problems such as:
• Homelessness
• Mental Health
• Drugs
• Alcohol
• Unemployment

Support workers are available to provide advice and information on health issues, training, employment and substance misuse issues and offer general support and advice on a one to one basis. We also deliver a needle exchange facility a needle pick up service and a condom service for sex workers.

They offer a range of services and house a skilled worker who specialises in homelessness and accommodation with the aim of ensuring that all service users who require it have access to housing advice and support.

We have a laundry and free male and female showers so that service users have access to cleaning facilities and a clothing room so that our clients can gain access to a clean change of clothes. We supply a free breakfast between 10am and 10.30am and also provide a hot 2 course lunch for 50p between 12-1pm.

Jane Hayward is the Centre Manager. Here is her message:

"The Glebe is an open access day centre for adults who are experiencing one, or more, issues of homelessness, drug/alcohol use, mental health or commercial sex work that makes them vulnerable. We are open Mon-Fri between 9-2pm and provide a variety of services for individuals in order to support their needs.  We provide a free breakfast every morning, free hot drinks all day and access to free shower facilities, including toiletries. The Centre runs with a very small team of paid staff and relies heavily on the support of members of the community to help run the Centre whether that is through volunteering or through donations.

Money donated over the Christmas period will help to support us to provide hot lunches for free. Over the last couple of years we have delivered what we call ‘The 12 days of Christmas’ whereby service users can get a 2 course lunch for free across 12 days over the Christmas period.

We really couldn’t do what we do without the help of our local community and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who supports our provision."

Funds raised will be shared with Walsall Night Shelter. Walsall Night Shelter is based at Darwall Street, near the Civic Centre and opened its doors on Monday 15th October 2018. The service is delivered by YMCA Black Country Group in conjunction with Walsall Council. The Shelter will be open every night until Sunday 31st March 2019 and is open from 8pm to 8am the following morning. Rough sleepers can access Shelter provision up until 11pm and have to undertake a registration form process. Individuals wishing to access Night Shelter must be 18+ years, must be rough sleepers and have been resident in Walsall (or have a clear link with the borough). The Shelter is run by paid staff with the ongoing, invaluable, support of a team of volunteers.
