To deliver child welfare training to 1600 members of clergy and leaders in Tanzania.

by Becca Faal in Cheltenham, England, United Kingdom

My name is Becca Faal. I am a safeguarding consultant.

I am working on a safeguarding project in western Tanzania to deliver child welfare training to 1600 people and I need your help.

Through my research for my Msc in Safeguarding in an International Context I discovered a need for child welfare training in churches and communities in Western Tanzania.

In my previous visits I have been staggered by the number of children who attend churches. There can be as many as 900 children in one church.

There will be children in Sunday school groups who may be suffering abuse and neglect. That is where we come in with the child welfare training.

I will be working alongside leaders in the church community to deliver training to 1600 clergy, leaders and helpers who are involved with children. They will be taught about the rights of children, the responsibilities of parents and how they can spot signs of abuse, respond to children and where to get help from.

One of the people I will be working with has had training on child welfare and was able to spot the signs that a child who attended the Sunday school was working as a modern day slave. He was able to seek support from a local leader and a social worker to ensure that the child was taken back to her family. The church and the social worker worked together with the family to educate them to make sure that this will not happen to her again.

It was great to hear that the church is taken very seriously and that people will listen to clergy and Sunday school leaders. Churches can be passionate and can teach people about the rights of children.

When I visited Tanzania in May 2019 I made a plan to return to deliver the seminars in July 2020. I need £8,500 to deliver the seminars, give people lunch and to pay social care and the police to work with us.

I am delighted to have been given a £3,000 grant from the Church of England and a £2,000 grant from Sylvanus Lysons if I can raise the remaining £3,500 by the end of this year.  Accounts will be kept of the money raised and how it is used.

If there is money raised over and above my target, I will use it for a second project in 2021. This second project will be to work with children in church youth camps in Tanzania to co-create resources on empowering and educating children to protect themselves from abuse.

At the end of this project there will be 1600 people trained to respond to the issues, concerns or worries which children have.

So please help me by donating.
