Aim

To build a Turbine House that will contain the equipment needed to convert the energy generated by the twin turbines into electricity

The construction of the hydro scheme on the River Thames near Caversham Weir started in November and is well underway, as shown in the photo below which was taken in early January.

The twin Archimedes screw turbines are due to be installed in early March 2021 and the first electricity is expected to be generated in April. We hope to generate around 300 Megawatt hours of electricity a year, this will vary year on year depending on river flow.

The Turbine House needs to be built in March to house the gearboxes and generator equipment that enables us to convert the energy from the screw turbines into electricity. It will also house the electrical control panels.

The Turbine House will sit at the top of the turbines as is shown below for a hydro scheme in Monmouth. Our Turbine House will be constructed from concrete blocks which we are planning to cover with an attractive mural that reflects the use of water to create energy. We've run a competition to select the design and have had some fantastic entries.

As much of our Turbine House as possible will be constructed by volunteers with building experience to keep our costs as low as possible. However, we need to raise some extra money to cover the costs of the materials for the walls and roof and to buy the security door which will prevent unauthorised access to the equipment.

We are looking for your support to complete an important part of this ambitious community project which a great team of dedicated people have managed to progress despite COVID-19 and significant flooding at the start of the work.
