I’m Catherine and I run Chandlers Attic, a small gift shop in Fife in Scotland. I’ve been a candle maker (chandler) with my TabeScent brand for a number of years. I’ve always been a creative person and very passionate about various forms of crafting because it can do so much good. Crafting can connect people, help with stress and give people a sense of achievement and it helps with reuse and recycling.
TabeScent started in our kitchen before it became too much and my husband Niall was constantly swearing as we spent our time dodging products and the materials sitting everywhere. We both agreed it was time to scale up and two years ago, almost to the day, we took on the small space that is currently Chandlers Attic. We created a small candle studio for me to use to make and a retail space for myself and other makers and crafters to sell our products which is the thing I’m most proud of, helping to support other makers, crafters, and artists by providing a retail space on shelf rental basis, Sale or Return and Wholesale. It also meant a great deal to have a gift shop in my adopted village, the place where Niall grew up.
(Current shop at 28 Main Street, Kinglassie)
Why We're Moving
We’ve found bigger premises and have made the decision to move so that we can create a community hub, crafting space and coffee shop, creating a place for people to meet and opportunities for them to come together We are funding a large proportion of this project ourselves but to make it a truly inclusive project from disabled access to craft workshops, and a space for local artists and makers to sell their work and much more, we are looking for your help.
There’s a front and rear retail space, a big kitchen area for making my own products, and for holding craft workshops. There’s a basement for office space, staff, and public toilets and SO MUCH STORAGE! It would offer about four times the space we have now and would keep the candle workshop and office activities separate from the retail space.
We’ve been to view the space - what a state it’s in. It’s been derelict for over 3 years and needs so much work.
(New premises at 20 Main Street, Kinglassie, which have been derelict for a few years)
This is our dream. Open the front area as a takeaway and small sit in coffee shop offering barista style coffees, teas, and cakes made by local bakers, providing a safe, welcoming, cosy atmosphere for locals to enjoy. More space to offer to local makers, crafters, and artists, and we’d have a place to hold networking meetings, community craft workshops… a real community hub. Additionally, but most importantly, we would need to hire people to help us run the space providing local jobs too.
What Do We Need the Money for?
The space is perfect, its right beside the main supermarket in the village so enjoys significant daily footfall. Its right on the main street so enjoys passing trade and is right at a bus stop, so easy access for everyone. Also, it allows flat step free disabled access and huge increase in space available but… it’s a real mess.
The space has been vacant for some years and has suffered from water ingress which has damaged the ceiling in three places. The space needs new flooring, ceiling tiles, lighting, and it has no source of heating. The current paint is peeling, and the front doors are solid timber, glass would be better for safety and aesthetics! Then there’s the sauna in the basement, and mirrors on the walls from its previous life as a gym that need removed.
Using both our own money, and what we raise here, we want to remove all the mirrors, sauna and other debris and we want to install gas heating, new lighting and ceiling tiles and decorate throughout. We also want to replace the front doors to make them safer to be around hot drinks. We need to build a counter, install water and drainage, and buy equipment and fittings as well as all the planning costs for change of use.
I’d also like to invest in people, employing local folk to work in the gift and coffee shop with me, to nurture them and bring out their own creativity. Any additional funding will be reinvested into the business, to provide community workshop space for locals.
Kinglassie is also a significant stopping point on the Fife Pilgrim Way. A popular walking route from Dunfermline to St Andrews. Our new space will provide the capability not only to offer refreshments and cake but will also be an information spot for walkers, a place to refill water bottles and access toilet facilities.
Chandlers Attic is already advertising on the official Pilgrim Way website as an information spot, but this new space would deliver the space for this to be grown too to offer more detailed information including the sale of maps and other memorabilia.
We have struggled so much with this, it’s been such a difficult year for everyone, emotionally, physically, and financially. Niall and I have had so many sleepless nights, wondering if we’re mad but I know in my heart that this new space can become a community hub, a bright, cosy, welcoming space for our community to enjoy, to learn and explore about our local area and allow space for locals to explore their own creativity. This new space isn’t just for us, it’s for everyone.
We’d love you to be involved in this project and we’re not asking for anything for free, so we're offering you a range of opportunities to pledge and receive some amazing rewards. We will try our best to get all handmade rewards out to you before Christmas, but we understand that all of the work needed to get the shop up and running, then the run up to our busiest time of year, and then making melts and candles may take longer than we hope, but we'll keep you informed at every step.
