BIG Sunday has grown tremendously since the first one just a few short years ago, a modest affair designed with the twin aims of providing a last minute substitute for the much-lamented Free Festival, and to bring to life a neglected and down at heel corner of Colchester. It is unique insasmuch as it is completely community led, using the model of enabling different people to mount all kinds of arts and entertainment events within a framework of a traditional festival structure under the guidance and management of an experienced events enabler. It is truly different because it is largely unfunded, relying on the generosity of the artists, poets, musicians, dancers, film makers, craftspeople and actors of Colchester to provide their services free of any charge. The result is absolutely spectacular with a staggering NINTEEN Venues and over SIX hundred participants, including over SIXTY Bands. And the best of all is that everything apart from the food and the drink is COMPLETELY FREE.
We are so proud of what we are doing, and so proud of the talent in town which makes it possible. But that was 2017....
This year I want to add Two new things: "Mrs Pankhursts Tea Party" a women's festival
The ROUGH Stage - A new community stage based around the theme of rough sleeping and street homeless with music, poetry arts , stalls and advocacy services.
These will together cost an extra £3000, part of which goes to the main expenses of the festival
