Astro Turf Replacement - Shrewsbury Hockey Club

Aim

Shrewsbury Hockey Clubs' 450 members are working hard to secure funding to replace our home venue. We need to raise £28,000 by February 2022

Who Are We?

Shrewsbury Hockey Club are a well established hockey club within Shropshire and the wider Midlands area. With the Women's Club founded in the 1890's and the Mens Club in the 1920's, the clubs amalgamated in 1990. With a rich history and over 130 years later, we are now a club with 20 competitive teams, with ages ranging from 5 right through to 75. We cater for all ages and abilities, and in order to continue to offer such a wide range of support to our 250 junior members, we much refresh our playing facility to secure our future. For the past 20 years, Meole Brace Astro Turf has been our home, over time, and use, the surface is now beyond its usable life.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Shrewsbury Hockey Club:

The global pandemic has hit sporting communities hard across the UK, and financially we have all been impacted with a complete loss of income and opportunity to fundraise for ever essential funds to operate a sporting club and facility.

What are we trying to achieve?

As we embark upon the biggest investment in the clubs history, we must find £28,000 by February 2022.

That £28,000 brings some physical outputs, but what it won't show is just how much it means to the dedicated and passionate individuals that dedicate huge amounts of time to build a club for the future.

• A new improved, upgraded playing surface - The current facility is beyond its life span, in order to secure safe playing facilities for the future, the pitch must be replaced before the start of next season - September 2022!
• New and upgraded lighting - Pivotal for these winter months to get training and games played safely are effective flood lights, not to mention the huge energy savings and reduced carbon footprint associated with new equipment compared to that 20 years old!

What else do the club do?

As we return to competitive sports, and begin to rebuild our club to thrive again, with a deadline looming we need support from the local community to achieve our goal of continuing to grow and develop the hockey players of the future, along with giving a hugely important space for our leaders of the future to learn teamwork, leadership, fairness and a whole host of life skills provided by grass roots sports.

Mental health has never been more prominent, and with players of all ages, genders and backgrounds returning to sport, we are seeing the impact of the last 18 months, giving back some normality and hugely important exercise to aid physical and mental wellbeing.

Our Younger Members:

A thriving youth section is at the heart of the success of Shrewsbury Hockey Club over the years, with numerous players coming through the ranks to successfully play at high levels.

• Over 250 junior members
• Teams starting at Under 8's up to Under 18's
• Regular training and coaching sessions

Shrewsbury Hockey Club thanks you for any support you can give to help us achieve our goal of being a prominent sporting presence within the town.

This project successfully funded on 7th February 2022
