New stretch target

Any extra money will go towards providing higher stipend for our actors and creative teams, who are so instrumental in making our shows a reality.

The theatre industry in London has undergone great trauma since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rich cultural institution of theatre and the arts has been temporarily removed from London’s landscape. However, separated by oceans and battling internet connections, a group of fresh, young writers and producers from eight countries and three continents have embarked on a journey towards a common goal: to Ascend to the West End.

The producers, writers and composers of Goldsmiths’ MA in Musical Theatre present Ascend to the West End, a festival of four brand new musical theatre productions that have been conceptualised, written, composed, cast and rehearsed in the midst of uncertainty and chaos.

Our vision is for Ascend to the West End to be an exciting new platform for early and mid-career artists and a springboard from which each of these four musicals may move into the next stage of development. We are passionate about rediscovering and cultivating the ingenuity of artists that has persevered through this turbulent time. As the next generation of writers, composers and producers, with ambition in our hearts and stories on our lips, we intend to reinstate theatre as a significant cultural landmark, both in the UK and internationally.

From 14 to 18 September 2021, the Tristan Bates Theatre in London will provide the stage for four world premieres of new musicals. The variety of stories and musical styles could not be any wider: from former circus performers to 1930's Hollywood actors, magical mountains to generational conflict. The international students of the only musical theatre writing programme in the UK are ready to amaze you with a whole new musical world.

We are excited to present the following four new musicals:

HILL BEHIND THE HILL

By Alice Dryden & Caleb Sharp

"Hill Behind the Hill" is the story of Jacob and Sebastian and the strange connection that brings them together. Beneath the bright lights of 1930’s Hollywood, Sebastian Raymond is an up-and-coming star, searching for the role that will place him among the greats. Sebastian is notably talented, irresistibly handsome, conscientious, kind and in love with the enigmatic Ayn Marigold. Amidst the pressure of tabloid scandals, dark secrets and misplaced confidence, the question remains: What is Sebastian willing to sacrifice for the idea of a perfect life? Who can he trust when he can’t even trust himself? What will he find when ambition, jealousy and manipulation start to invade the seemingly perfect world he has built for himself and it all comes crumbling down?

SEEDLESS LOVER PLUM

By YiZhang Feng, Ruochen Yang & Meiling Zhong

On the magical mountain Lusaka, the legendary seedless lovers' plum allows people to lose their memories. Every year, Christy and Scott - who share similar struggles, dreams and challenges - meet there to escape from their daily lives. As promises are made, it is difficult for them both to break the pact. Fortunately, this is where they benefit from the effect of the seedless lovers' plum, which makes them forget whatever they want to forget. And yet, it turns out that some people stay with you forever - even if they are no longer on the same mountain with you.

TEARS OF LAUGHTER

By Sarah Kohl & Tomas Williamson

"Tears of Laughter" is the story of 30-year-old Oscar who, 15 years ago, traded his working-class youth for the time of his life at the circus. After returning to his hometown, he quickly discovers that the equality and joy he experienced among his circus family are not lived, let alone celebrated, there. Fortunately, Oscar finds warmth on the stage of a local comedy club while trying to defy the cold society with his hope and optimism off-stage. But reality won't stop brutally hitting him, with heart- and man-breaking consequences.

THREE

By Caleb Sharp & Matthew Holloway

'What do you do with $600 at the end of the world?' This is the question asked by the Ugly Art Collective's first musical production, "Three: A Generational Musical". Inspired by the agitational theatre, Bertolt Brecht and the Hauntology of thinkers like Mark Fisher, "Three" follows the story of Robert, Micheal, and Z as they struggle to survive a financial crash and each other. Each one's world is pitted against the others' as they are threatened by eviction and starvation with no clear way out.

THE CAMPAIGN

We’ve got big dreams but, sadly, not the budgets to match them. Thus, we are looking for your support to help us make the festival the best that it can be!

Your contributions will be used to cover the production costs of the musicals, including sets, props and costumes. Furthermore, we will use them to provide stipends and travel expenses to the actors, musicians and creatives who are generously giving their time to bring our shows to life.

Please choose from one of the reward tiers we have available in order to make your contribution to the festivals!
