ABYSS Brewing is a forward-thinking micro brewery founded by us: Andrew Mellor and Andy Bridge.
We love creating beers with big personalities that we like to drink.
Born under Lewes in the cellar of the Pelham Arms in 2016, it wasn’t long before word got out about our psychedelic brews. Serving two kegs a week just wasn’t enough, so in 2017, we burst out of the pub cellar and moved into a small industrial unit at Palehouse Common. When we heard that the old Malthouse in Lewes was up for rent, we jumped at the chance to take it on, returning to Lewes to begin work creating a brilliant new space to make and serve our beers. We collected the keys earlier this month.
By Spring 2021, we will have completed the bar and cool room build and we can officially open The ABYSS Brewery + Tap.
Our new space is in the historic Davey’s Lane area of Lewes which is steeped in brewing history. Our brewhouse will be installed inside the old Maltings building previously part of the South Downs Brewery. With the new space, we'll be able to expand our production with an on-site brewery as well as welcoming you into our ABYSS world, with a taproom, a permanent Mexican Street Food kitchen curated by Carlito Riestra (a pioneer in Mexican cuisine from Guadalajara) and a regular programme of events.
You’ll be able to drink our core favourites: DANK MARVIN, TROPICAL THUNDER, DREAMZ and one off collaboration beers with some of the worlds finest brewers, all within metres of the tanks they were brewed in. Drink in the ABYSS!
Our ABYSS Brewery + Tap will be the culmination of the foundations we have laid in the last few years - the chance to bring together our vision of our brewery as an inspiring, inclusive creative hub.
It’s going to be great and we can’t wait to welcome you.
WHY ARE WE CROWDFUNDING?
Be part of our story
We are proud to have great loyal supporters and our dream has always been to share our journey and our beer with you.
By signing up to our Crowdfunder, not only will you be getting A LOT of free ABYSS beer, your support will also help us to build our new ABYSS Brewery + Tap from the ground up.
See where your money goes
Pledge and receive great rewards including amazing savings (for every £1 you pledge, we’ll give you £1.50 of beer in our tap room), merch and invites to exclusive events including tastings, tours and workshops. Or simply click the 'donate' button if you'd like to support us without a reward.
In short, if you like our beer and sign up to support us, then you’ll get to have loads of it and somewhere excellent to drink it.
We don’t just want your money though. Beer has the power to bring people together, and we want to use that to reflect our local communities’ interests by creating a space that celebrates everything that’s cool and creative in and around Lewes.
In 2019, we held our first ever psychedelic music festival - the SUPERFUZZ Weekender in association with Acid Box Promotions, a roaring success of noisy live bands from all the world, all washed down with SUPERFUZZ IPA. The ABYSS Tap will be home to regular events including creative workshops, live music, comedy and performance - some of which we will stream live to create an archive of ABYSS events online.
The Brewery and Tap will also be home to the ABYSS Cycle Club, the perfect base from which to explore the South Downs National Park with regular guided cycles.
There’ll be different zones to the space - maybe you want to get involved with something, or just enjoy a quiet beer - the good news there’ll be space for all at our ABYSS Brewery + Tap.
How long will the Crowdfunder run?
4 weeks - launching on 20th November and finishing on 18th December.
How much do we want?
We’re aiming to initially raise £15k to build our bar and deck out the space, but the more we raise, the more we will be able to develop the space so we have added a stretch fund to our target. It's good news all round - the more you help us with this Crowdfunder, the more free beer you get.
What’s in it for me?
Beer. For every £1 you pledge, we will give you back £1.50 in beer vouchers to use at our ABYSS Brewery + Tap. And that’s only the start. We’ll be offering great experiences and merch, too.
When will I get my voucher? Can I buy as a gift? When will it expire? Can I get cans or is it just for beer in the taproom? Is there a God?
Your voucher will arrive in the form of a printed voucher. We will be able to print the name of the recipient on the card so let us know if you are buying into the Crowdfunder as a gift. The vouchers are good for a year from purchase and are for beer served in the taproom - we want to get you in!
Are we going to make more beer?
Yep. We’ll carry on with the current offerings in increased quantities but will look to expand our range too - once the ABYSS Brewery + Tap is set up. Supporters will receive exclusive updates about our new products and we may even ask you in to test some of them.
I don’t like beer, but I do want somewhere excellent to go out in Lewes. Is this for me?
Oh yes. Our bar will not be limited to just beer. We will have some great low intervention English wines, spirits, cocktails, soft drinks, and amazing food. We’ll be putting on regular events and in time you’ll be able to hire out our brilliant space for events too.
How can I keep updated?
Sign up to our mailing list, follow us on IG, email us and as soon as we open, come and hang out.
Who even are ABYSS?
ABYSS is Andrew Mellor - Brewer and former head chef, compulsive foodie and proprietor of the Pelham Arms and Andy Bridge - producer and performer with a background in comedy and marketing. After meeting at art school over 27 years ago, their friendship has endured, creating memorable events utilising their complementary skills. They’ve now pulled together a local team to help set up the ABYSS Brewery Tap.
