Raising the deposit so we can stand a Green candidate for Bedford

Some people will inevitably try and position this election as being about Brexit but it isn’t.  And more importantly we can’t allow it to be.  Yes Brexit does need to be sorted to allow the country to make the changes it needs to, to ensure we properly address climate breakdown and the ongoing loss of bio diversity.

And that is the real challenge that needs looking at.  When you have the Governor of the Bank of England being quoted in the financial times saying that £16tn of assets are at risk of wipe out if action isn’t taken you know that this is a serious matter.  And the longer we wait till we address it, the worse the impact will be and the greater the cost to people, families, our society and the economy.

It’s also about the fabric of our society.  Savage and unnecessary cuts in the systems of support for those most vulnerable leading to rises in hospital admissions, rising knife crime, increased homelessness and unnecessary deaths.  It’s about the urgent and pressing need to replace Universal Credit that forces people into ’survival sex’ with a universal basic income that will give people back their dignity and sense of citizenship.

It’s about an electoral system that doesn’t give people voice.  Where constituencies remain in one party’s hands for ever and ever, increasing the sense of exclusion of those that want to vote otherwise.  A system vulnerable to manipulation by external actors. 

And yes it’s about Brexit too.  Giving everyone the chance to really decide what they want – not to have an answer manufactured for an artificial timetable to suit one person’s ego forced upon them.

It’s about voting for a living planet and a sustainable future.  It’s about choosing hope and compassion over greed and fear
