Founder Phil Geraghty: Why crowdfunding is so close to my heart

Crowdfunding has proved to be a fantastic tool for communities to come together to fund the things that matter to them, and the latest community to come together are those with heart disease.

The Heart Hive is a revolutionary platform that will allow patients with Cardiomyopathy and Myocarditis to get more involved with the crucial research which will help people with the same condition.

Cardiomyopathy UK and Imperial College have combined to crowdfund to launch the Heart Hive and make it available to as many patients as possible.

This project is very close to Phil Geraghty’s heart, one of the founders of Crowdfunder. Phil was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy 18 months ago. This is what he shares about his personal experience:

“Eighteen months ago I found out my heart was not pumping correctly and even after various tests and scans, still nobody knows why. Due to the research that has happened so far, my condition can be managed, but there is no cure. For many patients this will limit their day-to-day life and, unfortunately, their lifespan.

Cardiomyopathy is often the underlying cause of sudden cardiac death in young people and it can be transferred from parent to child genetically, therefore finding out about my heart condition shortly after the birth of my second son, was very difficult to deal with.

The teams at Cardiomyopathy UK and Royal Brompton have been fantastic in helping me to understand my condition, what I can do to help myself, and now, what we can all do to help others.

I’m fortunate enough to have had my condition detected and diagnosed early, but many people are not so lucky. This research is essential to save the lives of some 300,000 people in the UK who are living with these conditions.

From the moment I first heard about this project from Dr. James Ware I knew this had the potential to make a big difference to the lives of thousands of people with my condition. I’m aware of the big difference crowdfunding can make, and this is why I’m donating to The Heart Hive.”

The Heart Hive project is now live on Crowdfunder and needs your support.
