The GrassRoots TurfRoof University

Aim

This crowd funder is to cover the building costs of an off-grid Shepherd's Hut, providing accessible accommodation for our education centre.

The GrassRoots TurfRoof University is a project to create a physically and financially accessible education centre, based on the principles of solidarity, sustainability and self-sufficiency. We teach skills such as blacksmithing, refurbishing and making tools, herbal and holistic medicine, making shelters, coppicing and hedge-laying, pruning, grafting, charcoal-burning, building with stone, making home-brew, curing meat, working with wood, and how to live off-grid. All on a money-less exchange basis where possible.

We are in phase 2 of our project, which is to create a comfortable, accessible off-grid visitors space. The Shepherd's Hut will have solar power, wood burner, rainwater collection, a compost toilet, shower, a beautiful view and will meet the criteria for NAS mobility level 2.

Our "stretch" target is £7,000 which reflects the actual cost of this project including labour. However, any donations over the threshold of £3,500, which will cover building materials for the Hut , will go to stocking our library, which already includes titles on forest gardening, permaculture, herbal medicine,  blacksmithing, sustainable equine management, etc.
