What is The Funding Frontier?
Since ASN started, seven years ago in 2009, our motto has always been "Raise more money, help more clients".
The Funding Frontier takes this one leap further into the future: "Raise money, to raise more money, to help even more clients".
To break through the funding barrier, we need to take a bold step: we need to bring on a new crew member. A part-time fundraiser would mean ASN can raise more money to help the growing number of people contacting us. In fact, the money it costs to fund a fundraiser role should repay itself seven times over in 2017. So your donation now could turn into seven times that amount for anyone in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man who needs a safe abortion. You can be the one to take us into the Funding Frontier!
We're boldly going where we've never gone before. Will you join us?
This is ASN's second-ever crowdfunding campaign. Our first, in 2014, was The Next Level – helping to fund a part-time role for ASN's Director.
In those two years, client numbers haven't slowed, in fact they've sped up: in October this year, our 3000th client called. By this time next year, we expect to have heard from over 4000 clients. And it's not just the sheer number of women and families contacting us: increasingly we're hearing from people who need more than the £100-200 that used to be our average grant – sometimes much more. Women like Lauren*:
"I have just come out of hospital. When I found out I was pregnant by the man who raped me, I tried to kill myself."
Lauren is a single mother who tried to commit suicide when she found out she was pregnant but rang us as soon as she was discharged from hospital. She lives in a rural part of Ireland and survives on benefits and odd jobs: with the cost of an abortion and travel approaching £500, there was no way she could afford it. She also had difficulty finding someone to watch her children while she came over, so we were able to advise her on the travel route and clinic that would get her to and from England in the shortest amount of time. ASN was also able to provide a host and, thanks to generous pro-choice donors, a grant of £300 towards the procedure.
"I knew abortion was against the law here, but I never realised what someone would have to go through to get one. Thank you so much – you have literally saved my life."
If you're reading this, we think you'll agree that Lauren, and everyone who contacts us, deserves the information and money they need to get a safe abortion, wherever they live and whatever their circumstances. We need to be there for them next year, and beyond. Which means we need to have the money to help them when they call: next year, and beyond.
That's why we need a part-time fundraiser on the team; and why we need your help.
At Warp 3 we'll send you a thank you card plus a suprise ASN greeting card to keep or pass on to a friend who's as awesome as you!
You have questions? We have answers!
How much do we need to raise?
We are planning to have a fundraiser working with us part-time in 2016, and have estimated about £24,500 as the cost. We have had some support from some awesome donors already who have given us £10,500, but we still need your support to raise the rest.
The more money raised now, the more ASN can raise next year – with your help, a fundraiser could help raise seven times more than what we'll be paying them. Wouldn't that be amazing? You can make it so.
Isn't ASN an all-volunteer charity?
We absolutely couldn't function without our volunteers: over 60 amazing people give their time and expertise to keep ASN going, including the phone team, our hosts, IT support, social media volunteers, Trustees... the list goes on.
In 2014, amazing supporters like you donated to the Next Level campaign to pay our Director; and in 2016 we brought a bookkeeper on board (for one day a week) to help us keep track of donations and grants to clients. Volunteers are and always will be completely irreplaceable to ASN: but now is the time to add another professional to the crew so that we can keep raising the funds our future clients will need.
What happens if you don't reach the target?
If we don't raise at least £3500, we get nothing - so your donations are crucial. If we raise more than that, but if we don't reach the target, we'll still put the money towards getting a fundraiser on board. But our supporters are awesome and have never let us down yet, so we've got our fingers crossed!
Basically, the more you can help raise towards The Funding Frontier, the more money we'll have for client grants from our budget now, and the more money ASN can raise in 2017. It's a win-win!
A tote bag for your next voyage to the stars at Warp 5. Or trip to the shops. You're amazing wherever you are!
I'm in! How can I help?
We're so glad you asked! Please donate whatever you would like: you can choose your amount (from Warp 1 to Warp 7) on the right of the page, and each has its own rewards for us to say thank you! We'll also keep you updated throughout the year on how our new crew member is putting your donation to work.
Of course, we know not everyone will be able to donate right now, but you can still help by spreading the word across the galaxy: to friends, family, colleagues, on email, Facebook and Twitter using #thefundingfrontier.
Every little helps: at Warp 2 or more, this badge is your pass to the Funding Frontier and even more clients helped in 2017.
I want to donate but...
...I don't want rewards. That's fine! You can use the 'Just Donate' box above. If you choose a reward level but change your mind later, that's fine too: we'll email you after the campaign closes to check your address and details - you can let us know then. Alternatively, just email us anytime at email@example.com and we'll make a note.
...I want to stay anonymous. We completely understand. Just tick the 'pledge anonymously' box when making a donation and your name won't appear on the list of backers here, and we will never share it publicly.
...I've got a question. No problem – email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll get back to you as soon as we can (usually within 24 hours).
*We have changed Lauren's name to protect her privacy, but her words are her own.
**The rewards shown here are for illustration, we may make some tweaks to the designs before sending to you. Thank you!
