Shadow Tales on Tour

Prism Arts Studio Theatre are raising money to take their production 'Shadow Tales' on tour around theatres in Cumbria.

We did it!

On 20th Jul 2017 we successfully raised £7,380 of £7,000 target with 60 supporters in 70 days

New stretch target

We have reached our target of £7,000!
We are so thankful for to everyone we has supported us so far, we literally couldn't have done it without you all.

We are delighted that so many people have supported our campaign, it really is the best 30th birthday present we at Prism Arts could have imagined! We are so excited to take Shadow Tales out on the road later this year!

We have stretched our crowdfunder target to £10,000, it would be really amazing to raise this extra amount over the next week.
Any extra money will be used to boost our materials and publicity budgets meaning we can produce even better costumes, puppets and sets as well as reach bigger audiences.

There are lots of ways you can help. You can still pledge and get one of our rewards before it is too late and you might be able to persuade a friend, relative or colleague to join the party and get in on the Crowdfunding action! They too could have a fantastic reward!
Also, simply sharing the message on your social media platforms will make a difference.

Thank you once again for your support, we are immensely grateful to you.

Who Are We?

Hello!

We are Prism Arts Studio Theatre Company from Cumbria.

Studio Theatre is an integrated company where adults with learning disabilities and professional artists work in partnership.

We are actors, animators, musicians, directors and artists who have a myriad of different strengths, skills and talents.
Together, we produce high quality theatre productions which engage, inspire and entertain.

We create a new production in its entirety each year. We research, create the storyboards, develop the characters, design and create the set and costumes, compose the music and of course perform the production!

The theatre company is run by Prism Arts, a Cumbrian arts charity who believe that the arts are for everyone and work hard to create and run art projects which are accessible to all.

Why We Are Crowdfunding

We are currently working on a production called Shadow Tales. It tells the story of a boy called Charles, as he investigates his identity. The story follows him from Britain, where he has spent his life, back to India to discover his family’s past. The production looks at the history between Britain and India and combines tales of the Ramayana from India and folk tales from Britain. It will be visually rich, incorporating a mixture of shadow theatre with magnificent puppets and live performance.

We need your pledges to pay for this production to go on tour around theatres in Cumbria. Your pledges will pay for transport, materials and staff.

The production will be performed throughout Cumbria during November and December at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, The Old Fire Station in Carlisle, the newly revamped Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven and the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal.

Our previous tours

Last year, touring TLC: Tales of a Long Conflict, a production about the battle of the Somme, was a huge success. We performed to large audiences and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

“The performance was so breath taking and moving. I am still so speechless. Great acting, fantastic stage/music.”

“It was an excellent show. Moving, thought-provoking (on all sorts of levels) and it never sank into sentimentality.”

The show proved to be an incredible affirmation of the company’s abilities as professional actors and producers.

Due to the success of the last tour, the theatres have all booked us to perform Shadow Tales.

Below is a short compilation video of the hour long performance of TLC: Tales of a Long Conflict.

We are excited to be sharing all of this with you, and inviting you on our journey. We can’t wait to share Shadow Tales with you all.

A bit more about Prism Arts

For the last 30 years, Prism Arts has been creating and delivering arts projects which are accessible to everyone.

We are passionate about ensuring the arts are available to everyone by removing barriers which prevent or discourage people with learning needs or health issues from engaging in creative practices.

We predominantly work creating visual arts and theatre productions with people with additional learning needs, older people and younger people. Our visual art is showcased in exhibitions in galleries and public spaces and our productions are performed in theatres, schools and community spaces. We aim to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds and endeavour to change perceptions of work created by these often excluded groups.

Our office is in Carlisle but we work throughout Cumbria. We run 3 weekly art programmes in Carlisle and 1 on the west coast. We also run arts projects with organisations such as Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Cumbria Museum of Military Life, as well as many schools throughout the county.

All of our projects are run by professional artists who work in partnership with the participants, facilitating them in all aspects of the creative process from research, to creating, to exhibiting or performing.

More about Shadow Tales

Shadow Tales is inspired by the Border Regiment’s 160 year history in India. Cumbria Museum of Military Life have given us access to their archives which include diaries, photos and travel journals. Researching the lives and impressions of these soldiers and their families as well as the impact of Asian design and culture on the British life, we have woven traditional folk tales with those of India, the Ramayana to explore the common ground and universals of the two cultures.

The production is being performed at theatres across Cumbria. We are also offering a range of workshops to schools exploring themes within the production and theatrical techniques including puppetry and shadow theatre.
