The all-female Verdi: The Trousered Traviata and the iconic, all-male Bizet: carMen.
To underwrite the costs of appearing at the 2015 brighton Fringe Festival with Verdi's The Trousered Traviata, where girl meets girl and mother disapproves and Bizet's all-male carMen, a gay ménage à trois....
In 2014, Secret Opera began its 'gender in opera’ project with the re-imagining of Bizet’s Carmen as an all-male version: carMen, set in the gay community of liberal 1920s Spain. Early 2015 saw the completion of production of The Trousered Traviata - Verdi’s classic music but with the key roles all female. Both these alternative versions have provided a platform to examine the traditional themes of love, guilt, filial duty and sacrifice in the context of LGBT+ relationships.
