We want to professionally record songs written by people who are or have been homeless. We will sell the CDs to raise money for LDHAS.
Marginalised people have few opportunities to express themselves. In 2013 LDHAS and More Music In Morecambe joined together to run weekly music and singing sessions for homeless and vulnerably housed people. Over the years we have sung a broad selection of covers of popular songs, written some songs of our own and last year we sang, as Roaming Vox, at the Lancaster Music Festival. This was such a buzz for all involved we want to take it a stage further.
People taking part in the music sessions describe how singing, in particular, has lifted their spirits
"the only reason I walk the planet"
and restored their self-belief
"singing has really helped my confidence"
making a significant contribution to their recovery from addiction
" helps me deal with the bad stuff that happens"
and has helped them refocus and rebuild their lives, securing and maintaining a home and returning to paid employment.
Roaming Vox have spent the last year writing songs and now we want to go to the studios at More Music in Morecambe to professionally record those songs - all written by people who are or have been homeless. We think it is important to underline the achievements of our songwriters and singers and to demonstrate the contribution they can make when given opportunities.
"I understand that people care and that gives me the emotional response so that I can achieve stuff"
The project will not only produce a lasting testament to achievements but will also show our talents to the wider community, raising awareness and to some extent tackling social exclusion.
And we will have a cracking good party to launch the CD! Be there with us!
We're asking for donations to pay for the expenses of professional musicians, for the studio time to record our songs, for the production of CDs and towards the costs of the launch party. We can then sell the CDs to raise funds to contribute to the activities programme at LDHAS.
