Elected office is a real privilege. I follow one simple principle – that the people I represent come first and foremost every time. It’s a philosophy I’ve carried throughout my public service.
“I declare Ian Murray elected to serve as the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh South”, the returning officer confirmed something that I never thought would happen to me. Ordinary people like me didn’t become Members of Parliament but I’ve since learnt that it is actually ordinary people who become MPs. It was the first time in my life that I had only one job and I threw everything into it. I was determined to ensure I would be the most accessible, responsive, effective and local MP in the country.
Five years later, I'm proud to say that I've helped over 12,000 constituents, was voted 15 out of 650 MPs for constituent responsiveness, have held more advice sessions than any other MP. I've offered all 36,500 households a home visit, have knocked on 18,000 doors and have won prestigious parliamentary awards for community engagement.
I'm asking for your support to beat the SNP, keep the Tories out of Number 10 and win for Labour in Edinburgh South.
