First ever Mongol Rally entrant in an Electric Car

First ever Mongol Rally entrant in an Electric Car

Tackling the toughest unsupported car rally in the world in a 100% Electric Car to promote sustainable transport & raise money for charity.

We did it!

On 26th Jun 2017 we successfully raised £3,500 of £3,000 target with 65 supporters in 56 days

Project Aim

Since its birth in 2011, Plug In Adventures (PIA) has championed  its love and passion of Electric Vehicles (EV) to the community and beyond in a series of electric related challenges and documentaries.

On the lead up to and completion of our adventure we hope to get the global community talking, chatting and debating on the topic of electric vehicles. Also to engage with the public on changing people's perception of electric cars, all the while raising funds for two amazing charities as we truly believe this is the future.

PIA is focused on raising awareness to assist people make the move to electric vehicles whilst helping reduce harmful emissions in our cities. We are not a business, charity or organisation, we are simply a team of self funded EV enthusiasts that dedicates all of our spare time into promoting anything electric.

Having already completed a number of European based challenges in electric cars, PIA is all set to become the FIRST team ever to tackle the Mongol Rally in a 100% pure electric car. We are not talking a "plug in hybrid" or "petrol range extended electric car", the car only has a battery, so there will be no petrol or diesel put in....nada....ziltch!

The aim of this adventure is to help change the long standing opinions and perceptions about electric vehicles and bust myths like "range anxiety" and "no where to charge” .

What car will we be driving and what is the range of the car? We hear you ask......

We will be driving a bog standard 30kW Nissan LEAF which has an approx. real world driving range of 90-100miles per charge. We are LEAF owners and drivers and know the car very well. It is also the biggest selling affordable mass production electric car in the world.

As part of our adventure, while stopping to charge the car, we will be taking the opportunity to engage with the locals and also check out sustainable projects along the route. #chatandcharge

Some modifications have been made to the car to prepare it for some of the shocking road conditions that we will be encountering along the way.

  • Spacers added to suspension
  • 6mm aluminium plate to protect the underside of the car
  • Rear seat completely removed to create extra storage space and reduce weight
  • Roof rack fitted with LED strip light
  • Rally wheels for use in the rough terrain parts of the route

No modifications have been made to the battery capacity and drive train at all.

About The Mongol Rally

The Mongol Rally thunders 10,000 miles across the mountains, desert and steppe of Europe and Asia each summer. There’s no backup, no support and no set route; just you, your fellow adventurists and a tiny car. Starting from Goodwood Racing Circuit in Chichester UK and finishing in Ulan-Ude on the far east side of Russia.

Support for two amazing charities

By signing up to the Mongol Rally, teams pledge to raise money for charity  which will be split between the two following amazing organisations:

Cool Earth is the Mongol Rally's chosen charity. Cool Earth is an environmental charity that works in partnership with indigenous communities. The charity protects rainforest that without intervention will be destroyed within the next 18 months.

WWF Scotland is PIA's chosen charity. WWF Scotland use their experience, credibility and influence to help create long-term solutions to global threats to people and nature - such as climate change, the peril to endangered species and habitats, and the unsustainable consumption of the world’s natural resources.

How Can You Help

This trip requires a massive amount of planning. We will be driving through, and sometimes sleeping in harsh environments and possibly fighting for survival, therefore, there will be many things we will need for the trip. The two easiest and fastest ways to help us are to donate directly here on our Crowdfunder page and snag yourself a massive shout out on Twitter or a cool gift, then most importantly GET THE WORD OUT!

Tell everyone you know, tell everyone on Twitter, tell everyone on Facebook, tell your parents, tell your kids, tell Andy and the boys from work, tell your Aunts and Uncles, tell your neighbours, tell that person in the street you pass every morning but never say hello to, on the walk into work.....this will be greatly appreciated.

As a Donor

Outside of a massive shout out or bagging one of the excellent gifts and supporting the two amazing charities, your donation here on our Crowdfunder page will go towards helping us cover a few of the overall costs involved in entering the rally of which there are many.  Entry fee, car & travel insurance, charging fee's, charging cables and adapters, visa's, supplies, hostels, camping equipment, transporting the car back to Estonia...and the list goes on. Also any unforeseen expenses like break downs, carjackings and kidnappings, extortion, and emergency medical extraction. All of which are things that have actually happened during past rallies.

So all fun and joking aside you will be supporting us in a very dangerous endeavour. Some entries have  been known to lose limbs and even their lives!!

As a Donor, you will also get the satisfaction of knowing you helped us demonstrate to the world that sustainable transport is viable for the masses, and that if an electric vehicle and charging infrastructure can cope with the Mongol Rally, they can handle the everyday commuting needs of the general public.

You will also be contributing to two fantastic charities that are committed to protecting our environment, reducing vehicle emissions and our carbon footprint, while also helping fellow human beings worldwide.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our project and please click on one of the brilliant gifts on the right of your screen, we will appreciate it very much ........THANK YOU.
