Support the community purchase of 8 acres of ancient woodland
Can you support the community purchase of 8 acres of ancient woodland?
Community Organisation Tir Pontypridd is seeking to raise funds needed for the community purchase approximately 8 acres of ancient woodland on the outskirts of Treforest Pontypridd.
The deadline to submit informal tenders is 12noon, Tues 14th July.
This ancient woodland is made of predominantly broadleaf trees with an understory of hazel and blue bells and is on a steeply sloping easterly-facing gradient. It has been listed for sale for offers over £20,000 and comes with additional costs e.g. legal fees, fencing, maintenance etc.
So far, we’ve raised almost half of our £40,000 fundraising target. We’ve raised this using some of our own savings, some significant donations from residents, and this Crowdfunder campaign. We’re also waiting to hear back from some funders too.
We still have a hill to climb, and every donation you make will make a critical difference to the success of our campaign to secure this ancient woodland!
‘Barry Mountain’ as an inheritance for future generations
Community residents recall playing in these ancient woods as children. The old Barry Line railway used to run past and the woods behind became known for the railway built to transport coal from mines in the Rhondda Valley, to Barry Docks.
The coalmines have closed and the railway line went with Dr Beechings closures. But the woodland endures, surviving the demand for timber supplies during World War II, which saw part of the woods nearby felled, or used as a shooting range.
The woods have also survived the industrial legacy on the area. Where much of the surrounding environment is heavily polluted this small area of woodland, once known to history as Craig-Y-Fforest, has escaped mercifully unscathed.
Community members have expressed their support for Tir Pontypridd’s intention to purchase the woodlands and told us of their desire to conserve the heritage and ecology of the woodlands as an inheritance for future generations.
Older residents are hopeful children will play here once again. The Boys and Girls Club of Wales, who relocated their officers to the nearby Treforest Boys and Girls Club recently, are keen to access the woodlands with groups of young people.
We have one week left to secure this ancient woodland.
The deadline to submit the informal tenders is 12noon, Tues 14th July. This last week of fundraising is crucial in our attempt to purchase these 8 acres of ancient woodland and place them in community ownership and stewardship.

What happens if we don't meet our crowd-funding target?
If we don't meet our crowd-funding target, decide not to purchase, or our informal tender is not accepted, then we will retain the funds raised via this crowd-funder.
These funds will then contribute towards the next area of land that we look to purchase for the benefit of our community, nature and biodiversity.

Tir Pontyridd
A Community Benefit Society, Tir Pontypridd Cymdeithas Cyfyngedig was set up by residents of Pontypridd fed up of seeing land being lost to the very local communities who care so deeply about the places where they live.
As a membership organisation Tir Pontypridd has been slowly raising funds to purchase land through membership subscriptions. The land Tir Pontypridd purchases will be for the benefit of our community’s wellbeing AND nature.
Tir Pontypridd works with residents to secure and look after the land they purchase. Sharing knowledge, expertise, decision making, and resources to care for the landscape around them together, as a community asset.
