St John’s Church, in Penistone, is launching an urgent appeal to raise funds to replace its roof and preserve the fabric of the building.
Seventeen years ago, St John's Church faced a significant setback when the lead from its roof was stolen. In an effort to protect the building, felt was installed as a temporary measure. Unfortunately, the felt has not held out against the elements, leading to water ingress that now threatens the structural integrity of this historic site.
St John’s Church does not receive funding from the Church of England, making community support vital. Thanks to the generosity of grants and local fundraising events, we have already raised a significant amount of money. However, with construction costs escalating post-COVID, we need to raise an additional funds to complete the roof replacement.
The race is on to secure the future of St John’s Church. We call upon the community and supporters far and wide to help us achieve this goal. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to ensuring that St John’s continues to be a place of worship, community, and heritage for years to come.
Revd David Hopkin, oversight minister at St John’s, shared his thoughts on the appeal: “St John’s has stood as a beacon of hope and unity in Penistone for many years. The support we have received so far has been incredible, and I am confident that, together, we can overcome this challenge. This roof is not just about preserving a building; it’s about safeguarding a place where our community comes together in times of joy and sorrow. I urge everyone to contribute in any way they can to help us reach our goal.”
Councillor Hannah Kitching, the Mayor of Penistone, added her support: “St John’s Church is an integral part of our town’s heritage and community spirit. The efforts to restore and preserve this building are commendable, and I encourage everyone to support this vital cause. Together, we can ensure that St John’s continues to serve as a place of solace, celebration, and community for generations to come.”
