Help Northern Soul Kitchen create a new home for food, community and connection in the heart of Berwick.
Our Story
For ten years, Northern Soul Kitchen has been part of the heartbeat of Berwick-upon-Tweed, the "soul" of West Street - a space where food brings people together.
We began as a small grassroots initiative tackling food waste and social isolation. Over the past seven and a half years, our café on West Street has become a home for everyone: a place to share meals, stories, ideas and laughter.
Through rescued food and pay-as-you-feel meals, we’ve served thousands of people - not just food, but dignity, warmth and belonging. We’ve hosted community meals, skills workshops, youth projects and creative collaborations. We’ve shown that a simple plate of food can spark connection, confidence and change.
But now, we’ve outgrown our current space and it’s time for Northern Soul Kitchen to evolve.
Why We Need Your Help
Our little café has been bursting at the seams for a while. We’ve reached the limits of what we can do in our current building, and it’s no longer fit for the kind of community work we dream of. Plus our landlord is choosing not to renew our lease, we do not want to stop fighting avoidable food waste and if we don't find a new place soon we will cease to exist.
We need to move to a new space so we are hoping for somewhere that allows us to:
- Welcome more people with better accessibility and space for groups to meet.
- Expand our kitchen and training area to run workshops, community cooking sessions, and events that bring people together through learning and food
- Collaborate with other local groups and social enterprises, creating a shared space where grassroots ideas can take root and grow.
- Continue tackling food waste and food insecurity, making sure good food reaches bellies, not bins.
With your help, we can find and fit out a new town centre home for Northern Soul Kitchen - a space that’s warm, welcoming and built to serve our community for the next decade.
Our Vision for the Future
We imagine a Community Kitchen and Hub at the heart of Berwick:
- A meeting place where everyone feels at home, regardless of background or circumstance.
- A learning space where people can cook, share skills and gain confidence.
- A launch pad for local projects, helping others start up the kind of grassroots initiatives that make Berwick such a special town.
- A creative, inclusive café, where food is the start of a conversation
