HUTS Workshops provides arts and craft facilities for members facing mental health problems and social isolation
HUTS Workshops, based in Newcastle Emlyn (Carmarthenshire) provides arts and crafts activities and courses to support members with mental health issues, learning difficulties and problems with personal confidence, loneliness, and social isolation. The workshops are fully equipped to support woodworking, pottery, and a wide range of arts and crafts activities. In this the members are supported by staff volunteers and external experts. The centre currently operates for three days a week; we have plans to meet the identified and growing demand and move to five day operation.
In addition to the activities HUTS offers a "call and chat" service guaranteeing physically and socially isolated members regular telephone contact with trained staff. We also plan to reintroduce a "befriending" service, including regular home visits, as soon as resources permit
Currently potential members are referred to HUTS by primary healthcare providers, local mental health teams and other appropriate agencies. Call and chat members may refer themselves to the workshop activities. We are exploring ways to expand and extend referrals and to remove obstacles to those who could benefit from the services, but due to the physical and logistical challenges of our large and relatively disadvantaged rural catchment.
We are constantly looking to reduce our carbon footprint, to upgrade and make more efficient our equipment and premises, and to find ways of developing our facilities in order to maximise rental and other income.
