Aim

For 25 years we've got thousands of young men dancing. Now we have one mission: sustain Fuzzy, our foundational movement programme for boys

Watching four lads backflipping off a bench in 2000 was the moment that sparked an idea for dance innovator Zoie Golding: she formed FuzzyLogic Youth Dance Company, driven to increase access to dance experiences for boys. This year, the company now known as ZoieLogic Dance Theatre will celebrate 25 years of helping boys and men move for their mental health and connecting boys, and men, through dance and movement.

The proudly Southampton-based now nationally recognised company has supported over 20,000 people - many of them first-time dancers - worked in countless communities, and delivered game-changing dance and movement projects in schools, estates, businesses and public spaces. The mission? To challenge norms, break down barriers and prove that dance is for everyone.

ZoieLogic’s work has given life to three youth companies:
- FuzzyVision: a place for boys aged 6-17 to get started with dance and explore creativity – no experience needed
- FuzzyClear: inclusive, accessible dance for young men with autism and learning/development differences.
- FuzzyLogic: a nationally acclaimed touring and performance company for young men and boys to excel in dance and creativity

The reality is, the funding landscape is grim and ZoieLogic needs extra support to keep Fuzzy going. From sets, costumes and props, to teachers and facilitators, rehearsal spaces and production costs, every little bit counts.

It is no secret that funding in the arts is becoming increasingly competitive and difficult to secure yet now, more than ever, it is vital youth companies are sustained - especially for young men, whose mental health is in crisis. Expensive fees are not at the heart of what ZoieLogic does - we are a company dedicated to reducing barriers to dance and to supporting boys to learn, grow, connect and communicate through movement.

ZoieLogic’s work with boys through the Fuzzy programmes is now the stuff of legend. Many boys who have moved through Fuzzy have gone on to careers in dance, teaching, community leadership, education and business.

Young men and their families have benefited from being part of the ZoieLogic family, too. Through pastoral care, education provision, one-to-one mentoring, and a safe environment in which boys can flourish, ZoieLogic offers a non-judgmental environment, full of care, love and support.

Artistic Director Zoie Golding, who was awarded an MBE in 2022 for her services to dance, says, “I started ZoieLogic to challenge who dance is for and how it’s experienced. I knew I wanted to reach people through the power of dance, especially those who might never have thought it was for them, because dance builds confidence, creates connections and brings pure delight to participants.

"Our journey has been incredible, made possible by everyone who’s joined us along the way. As we celebrate 25 years, we are reflecting on where we have come, but we are also looking ahead to how we can continue to use dance as a mechanism to help make people’s lives happier, healthier and more creative. We are grateful for any support you are able to provide,” Golding says.
