Mein Freund  - A short film starring Lee Mead and Jack Roth

A dramatic chance encounter between a British soldier and German officer during the final hours of WW1 which changed their lives forever.

Based on an actual WW1 event, Mein Freund depicts human emotions and reactions as two men from opposing sides are encapsulated in an unusual encounter. With moments to spare one of them is likely to be killed as the enemy... but neither know which. Instinct and humanity kick in as the pair slowly see past their uniforms as soldiers to the men they are within. The decisions they make in the final hours of war will impact on their lives forever.

'We no longer have the men who were there that day left, they have all gone. If we can keep their memories alive by making films like this, I think it can only be a good thing.'

                                                                                                                                           Writer -  Andrew Dennis

 Synopsis

The last day of WW1, November 11th 1918. After four years of experiencing the living hell of war Walter, a British soldier finds himself at the mercy of the enemy in France. Detached from his unit, traumatised and exhausted Walter becomes snared unarmed on a barbed wire fence. His German captor Karl unable to pull the trigger on a trapped helpless man makes the decision that will change their lives forever. Karl frees Walter from the wire and leads him at gunpoint to a farm.

As they take refuge for the night in a barn, a remarkable bond develops between them whilst sharing meagre rations of food, vodka and cigarettes. The following morning they are discovered by a very shocked farmer who delivers the news that Germany had surrendered the previous morning. Overwhelmed and relieved to have survived, Walter and Karl go their separate ways dressed as farm labourers, not to see each other again for almost forty years.

The two old soldiers revisit the barn and look back at that night, sharing memories and gifts. Soldiers no more but friends.

Inspiration for making the film

Although Mein Freund has been written as a well planned short film in its own right, the makers are very keen and confident to develop the story into a full feature. The writer has two directions in particular where the story could go. Being based on a real life event that is so familiar to the world Mein Freund the short film would make an excellent calling card to secure funding for a full feature. We believe this is the type of film that audiences like to see and would gain recognition on the festivals circuit. The subject matter draws interest in many genres from literature, theatre, TV and cinema. The potential for this film to do well at festivals is high and if made into a feature in future we believe would not only give high entertainment value but also bring excellent returns for future investors.

How you can help make this happen

With a strong scripted story and great cast and crew on board we are giving this film the best chance possible to become a success.  To bring this film project to life it takes a dedicated team of creative individuals, each an expert in their own field. This short will be shot over just three days to create a finished film of approximately twelve minutes run time. However short, this film will be treated with the same dedication, care and work ethic as any much bigger budget movie. The cost to put this film ‘in the can’ as it is known in the business would need a budget of £13000. This amount will pay for the actors, costumes, technical crew, equipment, drivers and runners down to the person who makes the tea... Andrew Dennis!

£13000 will allow us to have a tangible product in place to edit and nurture into something quite special. Donations to help us reach this target will be greatly received and appreciated. You can donate any amount you choose or select an amount from the rewards list.  Thank you for your interest. Please share our Crowdfunder page to your friends and follow us on Facebook.
