Aim

To cover the set-up & operating cost of the charity cycle. Enabling the team to raise money for children's hospitals in Britain.

JOG 2 GIB Summary

During this ambitious endurance-cycling project we aim to up to raise £2.5 million to be split between three British children’s hospitals, by cycling over 5900+ km (3700m) from John O' Groats down through Europe to Gibraltar in 30 days

THE RIDE

This is a truly epic endurance cycle. The 2014 Tour de France route ran for a total of 3660.5 km over 21 days with 2 rest days.

  • The ride will begin on October the 1st through to October the 31st
  • Our route is 2239.5 km longer than this years Tour de France and there will be no rest days.
  • A minimum of 209 km a day every day
  • We will burn a minimum of 6000 calories daily. Just how much food is that? Lets see - 68 slices of toast, or 71 eggs, or 6 curries - 3 Naan breads and 24 Onion Bhaji. It is also the same as eating a full Christmas dinner every day just to maintain weight.
  • Our route' total climbing ascent is over 47,000 meters. To give this a little bit of perspective; it's the equivalent of you cycling up Mount Everest 5 times in less than a month. Truly torturous but worth every bit of pain we will go through to raise money for Europe's sick children
  • We will cycle through 9 countries including Scotland, England, France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Spain and Gibraltar...

After following a route very similar to the lands End to John O' Groats route in reverse we get to Europe and this will be our route

Great Ormond Street Hospital

is one of the world’s leading paediatric hospitals. Each year the hospital sees 200,000 visits from some of the smallest and sickest children from all over the UK with complex, rare and often life threatening illnesses. For many children, the hospital is their last hope. The treatment and care they need simply cannot be carried out elsewhere.

 Great Ormond Street Hospital

Each year Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity raises vital funds for the hospital to ensure that the hospital can continue its work to treat and care for very sick children. Generous support from the public helps us to:

• Fund our ambitious plans to redevelop and rebuild two thirds of the hospital site

• Support ground-breaking research into the development of new treatments for children

• Fund the most up-to-date equipment and technologies

• Provide parent accommodation and other support services for children and their families when they need it most

Morgan Stanley Clinical Building

Amazing things happen at Great Ormond Street Hospital everyday but it is only with the support of the public that we can continue to provide hope for thousands of children and their families each year.

Rainbow ward has an outpatient and review service providing on-going treatment and support from the paediatricians and nursing team.

Why are we Crowdfunding? - The Project

Rather than go down the conventional route of asking for corporate sponsorship on its own. To cover some of the event costs we thought we would be a little different and slightly more creative.

We wanted to to give the UK people, and its cycling community in particular, a chance to get involved and actually have a little bit of ownership of the cycle through utilising the crowd;  together we can facilitate the raising of essential funds for Children's hospitals in Britain by helping to cover the costs of the project. Ensuring that all donations go directly to the hospitals.

The traditional route of using just corporate sponsorship tends to rule out involvement for everyone except the people taking part. We wanted to engage with the cycling community and offer everyone the opportunity to get involved in a real way rather than just watch it on TV.

Money pledged will go towards the items needed below. This is not an exhaustive list but will give you an idea of the help needed.

  • Support Vehicles x 2
  • Fuel
  • Transportation costs
  • Cyclist Accommodation
  • Support crew accommodation
  • Food & Drink
  • Medical needs
  • Cycling equipment
  • Many other items

Using Crowdfunding and Corporate sponsorship to cover all of the set-up costs of the event enables us to ensure that every penny of donations go directly to the charities.

Testimonials

We are cycling between John O’ Groats and Gibraltar via the Race across Europe route.

"I am delighted to be given the chance to lead this team. I am also motivated to raise as much as possible for these wonderful charities, especially since I have a lifelong connection with Yorkhill Children's hospital since they cared for me as an infant and have previously fundraised for a number of children's charities. This will be a gruelling adventure, but ultimately it will be life-changing for the cyclists on the road and also the children that we are riding for."

Rewards

  • Signed pics of the team thanking you for your support.
  • Your name on a cyclists shirt
  • A signed personalised postcard sent to you from the route.
  • Signed posters of journey moments.
  • Personal signed copies of Mark's books by the whole team.
  • A little bit fame for you with your name and a photo of you on the charity cycle website and a support vehicle.
  • Opportunities to join Mark and the team at various stages and cycle with them for set amounts of time.
  • Signed personalised jerseys used by the team.
  • One of the teams' bikes signed by all the team.
  • Bronze Silver & Gold corporate sponsorship packages.

We need your help today to help the children of Britain tomorrow.

Every penny you crowdfund now ensures every single penny of every donation goes direct to the hospitals.

  • You will be helping to fund the most up-to-date equipment and technologies.
  • Provide parent accommodation and other support services for children and their families when they need it most.
  • Support ground-breaking research into the development of new treatments for children.
  • You will help pay for ceiling installations which will create the illusion of space and tranquillity, bringing in a more natural light to the hospital, making patients feel more relaxed and giving them a better hospital experience overall. Many children are afraid of treatment, either through uncertainty surrounding what will happen to them, or because they have had treatment before and they know it is painful. They will also act as a distraction, giving children something to watch and focus on during their treatment.
  • The money raised through donations will simply make for a better experience to our kids in hospital. You will enable all this through your crowdfunding.
