Invisible Voices is a book and unique Brighton Fringe Festival event raising money for First Base and Cascade Creative Recovery.
About the Project
Invisible Voices is a Brighton Fringe Project run by Seagull’s Wing, a local community group. The aim of the project is to give a voice to those who are homeless or are in recovery, as well as raising awareness among the general public. Accompanying the Fringe Event will be a book of stories, poems and factual information giving insight into how people end up becoming homeless and what it is really like. At a time when vulnerable members of society are facing cuts to the vital services that help them, it is even more important to give them a voice and help them stay off the streets (and in some cases complete their recovery).
The book, as well as reflecting just how hard life can be for some, will include stories of recovery and will demonstrate that there is hope and there are ways to help. Many organisations are doing invaluable work but they need your support. Funding is being squeezed constantly and without public support they cannot help those members of our society who are in great need.
Everything raised by the sale of books and photos will be donated to two excellent Brighton organisations doing such work: First Base and Cascade Creative Recovery. First Base is a centre that helps the homeless get off (and stay off) the streets, and Cascade Creative Recovery runs a café in Baker Street, Brighton, which is run by and supports those in recovery.
During the Brighton Fringe Festival the books and photos will be on sale at the Cascade Café in an exposition also featuring spoken words, poetry and music provided by those in Cascade Creative Recovery. We hope that all who come along will be moved, entertained and changed by the invisible voices which can be seen and heard on this occasion.
There will also be a photography exhibition by photographers Corin Spinks, Jack Savage and one of the members of the Cascade Recovery writing group. Most of the stories and poems are being provided by members of this group, which meets once a week and is just one of the ways those in recovery are being supported.
What we need
In order to fund this project we need to raise at least £1500:
- £700+ for book printing (plus additional pre-publication costs and adding a cover image). The more books we can print, the better.
- £100 (approximately) to rent the venue for the Festival event.
- £132 Brighton Fringe Festival registration fee
- £88 website setup
- £100 per print for the exhibition (plus additional mounting & framing costs)
- £50 for additional promotional materials (badges, postcards, etc.)
- £20 - £50 Leaflets and promotion in the run up to the event.
