Don't Be Vain Protect Your Brain is dedicated to educating people about the dangers of not wearing a helmet when you skate, scoot or cycle.
'Don't Be Vain, Protect Your Brain!' is something I say to my children when I put their helmets on before they go out on bikes, scooters or skateboards.
This summer, my 19 year old daughter Georgia Fairthorne fell off a skateboard without a helmet on. She hit her head and as a result suffered two bleeds on the brain. Georgia had to have brain surgery and was put in an enforced coma for a week. Doctors prepared us on the 3rd day of Georgia being in a coma that she may die as a result of her injuries. We were devastated and hoped for the very best possible outcome. After a week of her condition being stabilised, Georgia's sedation was reduced and she was able to breathe without intubation. Her body continued to heal and three days later she was discharged from hospital and able to come home.
The effects of a TBI can be totally life changing. Georgia was treated swiftly by the NHS and she is very lucky to be alive. Her recovery is currently going well and we continue to hope that the next two years (until the brain scar tissue is healed) continue to show improvements.
We have been VERY LUCKY. Many families with a loved one who has had a traumatic brain injury (TBI) don't get the result we had.
It is now my aim to raise as much awareness on helmet safety as possible. My goal is to spread the messages in nurseries, schools and colleges to children and to educate parents on the dangers that may be faced when not being adequately protected when cycling, skating or scooting.
I am raising funds to enable leaflets, posters and promotional materials to be sent to schools free of charge.
My dream is to eventually have a 'Brain Bus' that can be taken to schools to provide hands on learning on how important our brain is and the importance of wearing a helmet.
We have recieved a great deal of support from the general public while Georgia was in a coma. I cannot thank everyone enough! But I can stop this from happening to another family. Please help me get the wheels in motion!
